Boldness [and defiance] in front of the king is the quickest [means of] destruction

اجْعَلْ نَفْسَكَ مِيزَاناً بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَ غَيْرِكَ وَأَحِبَّ [أَحْبِبْ] لَهُ مَا تُحِبُّ لِنَفْسِكَ وَاكْرَهْ لَهُ مَا تَكْرَهُ لَهَا وَأَحْسِنْ كَمَا تُحِبُّ أَنْ يُحْسَنَ إِلَيْكَ وَلَا تَظْلِمْ كَمَا تُحِبُّ أَنْ لَا تُظْلَمَ

أَحْسِنْ رِعَايَةَ الْحُرُمَاتِ وَأَقْبِلْ عَلَى أَهْلِ الْمُرُوءَاتِ فَإِنَّ رِعَايَةَ الْحُرُمَاتِ تَدُلُّ عَلَى كَرَمِ الشِّيمَةِ وَالْإِقْبَالَ عَلَى ذَوِي الْمُرُوءَاتِ يُعْرِبُ عَنْ شَرَفِ الْهِمَّةِ

Beware of reserving for yourself (or concealing) that which all the people have an equal right to and turning a blind eye to what is manifest for the onlookers otherwise it will surely be taken from you and given to someone else

خَمْسَةٌ يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يُهَانُوا الدَّاخِلُ بَيْنَ اثْنَيْنِ لَمْ يُدْخِلَاهُ فِي أَمْرِهِمَا وَالْمُتَأَمِّرُ عَلَى صَاحِبِ الْبَيْتِ فِي بَيْتِهِ وَالْمُتَقَدِّمُ عَلَى مَائِدَةٍ لَمْ يُدْعَ إِلَيْهَا وَالْمُقْبِلُ بِحَدِيثِهِ عَلَى غَيْرِ مُسْتَمِعٍ وَالْجَالِسُ فِي الْمَجَالِسِ الَّتِي لَا يَسْتَحِقُّهَا

Sometimes the blind one arrives at his goal

When blessings are [openly] displayed, the enviers increase

You must seek the fulfilment of your needs through people of honourable dispositions and origins, you will be successful [in getting what you need] with them, without any delay or any sense of obligation

So be wary of [your duty towards] Allah, O servants of Allah, with the God-wariness of one who tucks up his clothes in preparation [for fulfilling the commandments of Allah] and makes great effort, who acts quickly during the short period [he has] and hurries out of fear [of losing the opportunity]
فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ عِبَادَ اللَّهِ تَقِيَّةَ [تُقَاةَ] مَنْ شَمَّرَ تَجْرِيراً [تَجْرِيداً] وَجَدَّ تَشْمِيراً وَأَكْمَشَ فِي مَهَلٍ وَبَادَرَ عَنْ وَجَلٍ

Sometimes the intended objective may be acquired

لَا تَأْمَنَنَّ مَلُولًا وَإِنْ تَحَلَّى بِالصِّلَةِ فَإِنَّهُ لَيْسَ فِي الْبَرْقِ الْخَاطِفِ مُسْتَمْتَعٌ لِمَنْ يَخُوضُ الظَّلَمَةَ

Do not declare your enmity to your enemy and do not rebuke your friend; and accept the excuse [you are given] even if it is a lie, and do not give [a forceful] response despite having the power to do so, even if it be your right
لَا تُنَابِذْ عَدُوَّكَ وَلَا تُقَرِّعْ صَدِيقَكَ وَاقْبَلِ الْعُذْرَ وَإِنْ كَانَ كَذِباً وَدَعِ الْجَوَابَ عَنْ قُدْرَةٍ وَإِنْ كَانَ لَكَ

Let not what people say about you dishearten you, for indeed if what they say is true then it is a sin whose punishment has been expedited and if it is not true then it is [as] a good deed that you have not performed [but has been recorded in your book of deeds]
لَا يَسُوءَنَّكَ مَا يَقُولُ النَّاسُ فِيكَ فَإِنَّهُ إِنْ كَانَ كَمَا يَقُولُونَ كَانَ ذَنْباً عُجِّلَتْ عُقُوبَتُهُ وَإِنْ كَانَ عَلَى خِلَافِ مَا قَالُوا كَانَتْ حَسَنَةً لَمْ تَعْمَلْهَا

There is no honour like eminence
لَا شَرَفَ كَالسُّؤْدَدِ

One who is not obeyed has no opinion
لَا رَأْيَ لِمَنْ لَا يُطَاعُ

The oppressed does not prevail without a helper
لَا يَنْتَصِرُ الْمَظْلُومُ بِلَا نَاصِرٍ

The command of Allah, the Glorified, is not established [and executed] except by one who neither corrupts nor beguiles, nor is he deceived by [that which he] desires
لَا يُقِيمُ أَمْرَ اللَّهِ سُبْحَانَهُ إِلَّا مَنْ لَا يُصَانِعُ وَلَا يُخَادِعُ وَلَا تَغُرُّهُ الْمَطَامِعُ

Make [matters] easy and not arduous; make [them] light and not strenuous

With good health, enjoyment becomes complete

With good health, there is delight in the taste [of food]

Be cautious of the cold [of winter] at its onset and embrace it towards its ending, for it acts upon the bodies as it acts upon the branches its beginning scorches and its end causes leaves to grow
تَوَقَّوُا الْبَرْدَ فِي أَوَّلِهِ وَتَلَقَّوْهُ فِي آخِرِهِ فَإِنَّهُ يَفْعَلُ فِي الْأَبْدَانِ كَمَا يَفْعَلُ فِي الْأَغْصَانِ أَوَّلُهُ يُحْرِقُ وَآخِرُهُ يُورِقُ

The garment of well-being is the most pleasant of attires

Physical health is one of the most wholesome bounties

How can one be deceived by the health of a body that is prone to malady?
كَيْفَ يَغْتَرُّ بِسَلَامَةِ جِسْمٍ مُعَرَّضٍ لِلْآفَاتِ

(When he was asked ‘how are you O Am?r al-Mu’min?n?’, he replied: ) How would he be whom life is driving towards death, whose state of health can be changed to sickness at any moment and who can be approached [by death] from his place of safety?!
كَيْفَ يَكُونُ مَنْ يَفْنَى بِبَقَائِهِ وَيَسْقُمُ بِصِحَّتِهِ وَيُؤْتَى مِنْ مَأْمَنِهِ

There is no remedy for the one who is fond of his ailment

There is no cure for the one who hides his ailment from his doctor

Good health and gluttony do not go together

There is no preservation more averting [of harm] than security [that is granted by Allah]

Youthfulness and senility do not go together

Strong determination and lavishness do not go together

Good health is not attained except through a good diet

How often has [the eating of] one food prevented [the eating of] other foods

Whoever conceals his hidden ailment, his physician becomes incapable of curing him
