It is upon you to strive but it is not upon you to succeed.

One who falls short is deficient

One who lacks diligence does not attain distinction

The ideal [person] is one whose seriousness prevails over his jesting [and frivolity]

If you must compete with each other, then vie for [acquiring] desirable qualities and praiseworthy traits
إِنْ كُنْتُمْ لَا مَحَالَةَ مُتَنَافِسِينَ فَتَنَافَسُوا فِي الْخِصَالِ الرَّغِيبَةِ وَخِلَالِ الْمَجْدِ

Never will your striving for that which improves you and earns divine reward be wasted.

Seek and you shall find.

Whoever embarks upon [any action with] diligence, overpowers his opponent
