الْمَرْءُ بِهِمَّتِهِ
A man is [gauged] by his endeavour

الْمَرْءُ بِهِمَّتِهِ لَا بِقُنْيَتِهِ
A person is [valued] by his endeavour [and effort], not by his [material] acquisition

أَبْعَدُ الْهِمَمِ أَقْرَبُهَا مِنَ الْكَرَمِ
The farthest endeavours are those that are closest to nobleness

أَشْرَفُ الْهِمَمِ رِعَايَةُ الذِّمَامِ
The most honourable of endeavours is being careful of [fulfilling] one’s pledges

شَجَاعَةُ الرَّجُلِ عَلَى قَدْرِ هِمَّتِهِ وَغَيْرَتُهُ عَلَى قَدْرِ حَمِيَّتِهِ
The courage of a man is proportionate to his ambition, and his sense of honour is equivalent to his zeal

طُوبَى لِمَنْ قَصَّرَ هِمَّتَهُ عَلَى مَا يَعْنِيهِ وَجَعَلَ كُلَّ جِدِّهِ لِمَا يُنْجِيهِ
Blessed is the one who reduces his effort in that which does not concern him and exerts all his efforts for that which will save him

عَلَى قَدْرِ الْهِمَّةِ تَكُونُ الْحَمِيَّةُ
One’s zeal is [proportionate] to the extent of one’s endeavour

مَنْ رَقَى دَرَجَاتِ الْهِمَمِ عَظَّمَتْهُ الْأُمَمُ
One who rises to the [higher] levels of endeavour [and determination] is glorified [and considered as great] by the nations

مَا رَفَعَ امْرَأً كَهِمَّتِهِ وَلَا وَضَعَهُ كَشَهْوَتِهِ
Nothing raises a person like his [earnest] endeavour and nothing lowers him like his lustful desire

لَا مُرُوَّةَ لِمَنْ لَا هِمَّةَ لَهُ
There is no magnanimity in one who has no determination

الشَّرَفُ بِالْهِمَمِ الْعَالِيَةِ لَا بِالرِّمَمِ الْبَالِيَةِ
Honor is attained by earnest endeavors not by worn-out bones [of one’s ancestors]

أَحْسَنُ الشِّيَمِ شَرَفُ الْهِمَمِ
The best of qualities is honourable ambition

خَيْرُ الْهِمَمِ أَعْلَاهَا
The best endeavours are the loftiest of them

كُنْ بَعِيدَ الْهِمَمِ إِذَا طَلَبْتَ كَرِيمَ الظَّفَرِ إِذَا غَلَبْتَ
Be lofty in your endeavours when you seek something and honourable in victory when you overpower [your enemy]

مَنْ كَبُرَتْ هِمَّتُهُ كَبُرَ اهْتِمَامُهُ
One whose endeavour is great, his care [and attention towards it] becomes great

مَنْ شَرُفَتْ هِمَّتُهُ عَظُمَتْ قِيمَتُهُ
One whose endeavour is honourable, his value becomes great

مَنْ كَبُرَتْ هِمَّتُهُ عَزَّ مَرَامُهُ
One whose endeavour is great, his cause is worthy

يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَكُونَ التَّفَاخُرُ بِعَلِيِّ الْهِمَمِ وَالْوَفَاءِ بِالذِّمَمِ وَالْمُبَالَغَةِ فِي الْكَرَمِ لَا بِبَوَالِي الرِّمَمِ وَرَذَائِلِ الشِّيَمِ
Boasting ought to be about the greatest effort, keeping promises and being overly generous, not about the worn out bones [of one’s ancestors] and evil traits

مَنْ صَغُرَتْ هِمَّتُهُ بَطَلَتْ فَضِيلَتُهُ
One whose endeavour is insignificant, his merit is nullified

أَتْعَبُ النَّاسِ قَلْباً مَنْ عَلَتْ هِمَّتُهُ وَكَثُرَتْ مُرُوءَتُهُ وَقَلَّتْ مَقْدُرَتُهُ
The person who has the weariest heart is one whose endeavour is great and whose magnanimity is abundant, yet his [financial ability and] resources are minimal

بِقَدْرِ الْهِمَمِ تَكُونُ الْهُمُومُ
Worries [and concerns] are [proportionate] to the extent of [one’s] endeavours

To the extent of endeavours, there are anxieties

هُمُومُ الرَّجُلِ عَلَى قَدْرِ هِمَّتِهِ وَغَيْرَتُهُ عَلَى قَدْرِ حَمِيَّتِهِ
The worries of a man are to the extent of his endeavour and his sense of honour is to the extent of his zeal
