صاحب الحكماء و العلماء
جَالِسْ أَهْلَ الْوَرَعِ وَالْحِكْمَةِ وَأَكْثِرْ مُنَاقَشَتَهُمْ فَإِنَّكَ إِنْ كُنْتَ جَاهِلًا عَلَّمُوكَ وَإِنْ كُنْتَ عَالِماً ازْدَدْتَ عِلْماً
Sit in the company of the people of piety and wisdom and increase your discourse with them, for if you are ignorant they will enlighten you and if you are knowledgeable, you will increase your knowledge

جَالِسِ الْحُكَمَاءَ يَكْمُلْ عَقْلُكَ وَتَشْرُفْ نَفْسُكَ وَيَنْتَفِ عَنْكَ جَهْلُكَ
Sit in the company of the wise and your intelligence will be improved, you will ennoble yourself and your ignorance will be removed from you

صَاحِبِ الْحُكَمَاءَ وَجَالِسِ الْحُلَمَاءَ وَأَعْرِضْ عَنِ الدُّنْيَا تَسْكُنْ جَنَّةَ الْمَأْوَى
Accompany the wise, associate with the forbearing and turn away from this world you shall dwell in the Garden of the Abode

مُجَالَسَةُ الْحُكَمَاءِ حَيَاةُ الْعُقُولِ وَشِفَاءُ النُّفُوسِ
Agreement with companions prolongs the companionship; and showing courtesy in matters makes the means [of accomplishment] easy

جَالِسِ الْعُلَمَاءَ يَزْدَدْ عِلْمُكَ وَيَحْسُنْ أَدَبُكَ وَتَزْكُ نَفْسُكَ
Sit with the scholars and your knowledge will increase, your etiquette will improve and your soul will become purified

جَاوِرِ الْعُلَمَاءَ تَسْتَبْصِرْ
Be close to the scholars and you will perceive

خَيْرُ مَنْ صَاحَبْتَ ذَوُو الْعِلْمِ وَالْحِلْمِ
The best of those whom you can accompany are the people of knowledge and insight

عَجِبْتُ لِمَنْ يَرْغَبُ فِي التَّكَثُّرِ مِنَ الْأَصْحَابِ كَيْفَ لَا يَصْحَبُ الْعُلَمَاءَ الْأَلِبَّاءَ الْأَتْقِيَاءَ الَّذِينَ يَغْنَمُ فَضَائِلَهُمْ وَتَهْدِيهِ [تهذبه] عُلُومُهُمْ وَتُزَيِّنُهُ صُحْبَتُهُمْ
I am amazed at the one who seeks more companions why does he not accompany the wise, pious scholars from whose character he can benefit and from whose knowledge he can get guidance and whose company is an embellishment for him!

لِقَاءُ أَهْلِ الْمَعْرِفَةِ عِمَارَةُ الْقُلُوبِ وَمُسْتَفَادُ الْحِكْمَةِ
Meeting the people of cognizance is a means of strengthening the hearts and benefitting of wisdom

يَنْبَغِي لِلْعَاقِلِ أَنْ يُكْثِرَ مِنْ صُحْبَةِ الْعُلَمَاءِ وَالْأَبْرَارِ وَيَجْتَنِبَ مُقَارَنَةَ الْأَشْرَارِ وَالْفُجَّارِ
It behoves the intelligent person to increase his association with the scholars and the virtuous ones, and to keep away from the company of the evil and wicked ones

بِحُسْنِ الصُّحْبَةِ تَكْثُرُ الرِّفَاقُ
Through good companionship, camaraderie increases

فِي حُسْنِ الْمُصَاحَبَةِ يَرْغَبُ الرِّفَاقُ
It is in times of [financial] difficulty that the value of a friend’s generosity becomes apparent

مَنْ أَحْسَنَ الْمُصَاحَبَةَ كَثُرَ أَصْحَابُهُ
Whoever is concerned about you, then he is your [true] friend

اصْحَبْ تَخْتَبِرْ
Accompany [people] so that you may gauge [their true nature]

إِغْبَابُ الزِّيَارَةِ أَمَانٌ مِنَ الْمَلَالَةِ
Visiting [one’s brothers in faith] on a regular basis is protection from lethargy

أَحْسَنُ الشِّيَمِ إِكْرَامُ الْمُصَاحِبِ وَإِسْعَافُ الطَّالِبِ
It is better and more appropriate to associate with people of wisdom and intelligence

أَحَقُّ مَنْ أَطَعْتَهُ مَنْ أَمَرَكَ بِالتُّقَى وَنَهَاكَ عَنِ الْهَوَى
The most deserving of [obedience from] those whom you obey is the one who orders you to [maintain] piety and forbids you from [following] vain desires

إِذَا طَالَتِ الصُّحْبَةُ تَأَكَّدَتِ الْحُرْمَةُ
As the companionship prolongs, the [mutual] respect is affirmed

خَيْرُ مَنْ صَحِبْتَهُ مَنْ لَا يُحْوِجُكَ إِلَى حَاكِمٍ بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَهُ
The best person you can accompany is the one who does not compel you to seek adjudication between yourself and him

خَيْرُ مَنْ صَحِبْتَ مَنْ وَلَّهَكَ بِالْأُخْرَى وَزَهَّدَكَ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَأَعَانَكَ عَلَى طَاعَةِ الْمَوْلَى
The best companion is one who makes you infatuated with the Hereafter, urges you to renounce worldly pleasures and assists you in obeying your Lord

خَالِطُوا النَّاسَ بِأَلْسِنَتِكُمْ وَأَجْسَادِكُمْ وَزَايِلُوهُمْ بِقُلُوبِكُمْ وَأَعْمَالِكُمْ
Interact with people through your tongues and your bodies, but part from them with your hearts and your actions

جَالِسِ الْفُقَرَاءَ تَزْدَدْ شُكْراً
One who sits in the company of the poor increases in [his] gratitude

جَالِسِ الْحُلَمَاءَ تَزْدَدْ حِلْماً
Sit in the company of the forbearing and you will increase your forbearance

زَايِلُوا أَعْدَاءَ اللَّهِ وَوَاصِلُوا أَوْلِيَاءَ اللَّهِ
Keep away from the enemies of Allah and maintain ties with the friends of Allah

لِيَكُنْ آثَرَ النَّاسِ عِنْدَكَ [إِلَيْكَ] مَنْ أَهْدَى إِلَيْكَ عَيْبَكَ [مرشدك] وَأَعَانَكَ عَلَى نَفْسِكَ
Let the most preferred people in your eyes be the ones who guide you to your faults and help you to reform yourself

رُبَّ بَعِيدٍ أَقْرَبُ مِنْ كُلِّ قَرِيبٍ
Many a distant one is closer than every near one

فِي كُلِّ صُحْبَةٍ اخْتِيَارٌ

قَطِيعَةُ الْعَاقِلِ لَكَ بَعْدَ نَفَاذِ الْحِيلَةِ فِيكَ
The intelligent person [only] cuts off ties with you after failing to find any other way out

The peripheries are the sitting places of the honourable
