بِرُّ الْوَالِدَيْنِ أَكْبَرُ فَرِيضَةٍ
Being good to parents is the greatest [and most important] duty.

بَرُّوا آبَاءَكُمْ يَبَرَّكُمْ أَبْنَاؤُكُمْ
Be good to your parents and your children will be good to you.

مَنْ بَرَّ وَالِدَيْهِ بَرَّهُ وُلْدُهُ
Whoever is good to his parents, his child will be good to him.

مَوَدَّةُ الْآبَاءِ نَسَبٌ بَيْنَ الْأَبْنَاءِ
The affection of parents is [the basis of] the relationship between siblings.

مَوْتُ الْوَالِدِ قَاصِمَةُ الظَّهْرِ
The death of a father breaks one’s back.

الْوَلَدُ الصَّالِحُ أَجْمَلُ الذِّكْرَيْنِ
A righteous child is the more beautiful of the two recollections

الْوَلَدُ أَحَدُ الْعَدُوَّيْنِ
A child is one of the two enemies

أَشَدُّ الْمَصَائِبِ سُوءُ الْخَلَفِ
The severest of hardships is [having] evil offspring

خَيْرُ مَا وَرَّثَ الْآبَاءُ الْأَبْنَاءَ الْأَدَبُ
The best thing that parents can bequeath to their children is good etiquette

ثَلَاثٌ مِنْ أَعْظَمِ الْبَلَاءِ كَثْرَةُ الْعَائِلَةِ وَغَلَبَةُ الدَّيْنِ وَدَوَامُ الْمَرَضِ
Three things are from the greatest tribulations: a very large family, an overwhelming loan and unrelenting sickness

شَرُّ الْأَوْلَادِ الْعَاقُّ
The worst of all children is the undutiful one

فَقْدُ الْوَلَدِ مُحْرِقُ الْكَبِدِ
The loss of a child burns the heart

عَظَّمَ اللَّهُ أَجْرَكَ فِيمَا أَبَادَ وَبَارَكَ لَكَ فِيمَا أَفَادَ
He (‘a) consoled a man whose son passed away and [at the same time] was blessed with the birth of [another] son saying: May Allah make your reward great [for your patience] in that which He took away, and may His blessings be with you in that which He has bestowed [upon you]

مَنِ اسْتَنْكَفَ مِنْ أَبَوَيْهِ فَقَدْ خَالَفَ الرُّشْدَ
One who scorns his parents has diverged from the right path.

مِنَ الْعُقُوقِ إِضَاعَةُ الْحُقُوقِ
Disregarding the rights [of your parents] is from [the acts of] filial impiety

مَوْتُ الْوَلَدِ صَدْعٌ فِي الْكَبِدِ
The death of a child is [like a] tear in the heart

وَلَدٌ عَقُوقٌ مِحْنَةٌ وَشُؤْمٌ
The undutiful child is a tribulation and a misfortune

وَلَدُ السَّوْءِ يَهْدِمُ الشَّرَفَ وَيَشِينُ السَّلَفَ
An evil child destroys one’s honour and disgraces one’s ancestors

وَلَدُ السَّوْءِ يَعَرُّ [يعز] السَّلَفَ وَيُفْسِدُ الْخَلَفَ
An evil child dishonours one’s ancestors and corrupts one’s descendants

مَوْتُ الْأَخِ قَصُّ الْجَنَاحِ وَالْيَدِ
No community has established brotherhood for other than seeking the pleasure of Allah, the Glorified, but that their brotherhood will be counted as a sin against them on the day when the deeds are presented to Allah, the Glorified
