Obligation corrupts the favour

الْمَعْرُوفُ يُكَدِّرُهُ تَكْرَارُ الْمَنِّ بِهِ
A benevolent act is sullied by repeatedly putting one under obligation through it

الْمَطَلُ وَالْمَنُّ مُنَكِّدُ الْإِحْسَانِ
Delay and obligation are the spoilers of [the] favour [one does to others]

إِيَّاكَ وَالْمَنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ فَإِنَّ الِامْتِنَانَ يُكَدِّرُ الْإِحْسَانَ
Beware of putting obligations with your good acts for indeed [putting others under] obligation spoils favours

بِالْمَنِّ يُكَدَّرُ الْإِحْسَانُ
Through obligation the favour is spoilt

بِكَثْرَةِ الْمَنِّ تُكَدَّرُ الصَّنِيعَةُ
By putting a lot of obligation, the good action is spoilt

تَمَامُ الْإِحْسَانِ تَرْكُ الْمَنِّ بِهِ
The completion of benevolence is abandoning [putting one under] obligation by it

شَرُّ النَّوَالِ مَا تَقَدَّمَهُ الْمَطَلُ وَتَعَقَّبَهُ الْمَنُّ
The worst grant is that which is preceded by delay and followed by obligation

شَرُّ الْمُحْسِنِينَ الْمُمْتَنُّ بِإِحْسَانِهِ
The worst of the benevolent ones is the one who puts others under obligation by his favour

طُولُ الِامْتِنَانِ يُكَدِّرُ صَفْوَ الْإِحْسَانِ
Prolonged obligation spoils the pureness of a good turn

ظُلْمُ الْإِحْسَانِ قُبْحُ الِامْتِنَانِ
The oppression of favours is [through] the repulsiveness of [putting others under] obligation

ظَلَمَ الْمُرُوَّةَ مَنْ مَنَّ بِصَنِيعِهِ
One who puts an obligation [on others] by his good action has oppressed magnanimity

كَثْرَةُ الْمَنِّ تُكَدِّرُ الصَّنِيعَةَ
Too much obligation spoils the good action

لَيْسَ مِنَ الْكَرَمِ تَنْكِيدُ الْمِنَنِ بِالْمَنِّ
It is not from munificence to spoil the favours [one does to others] by [putting them under] obligation

مَنْ مَنَّ بِإِحْسَانِهِ كَدَّرَهُ
One who puts others under obligation for his favour, spoils it

مَنْ مَنَّ بِمَعْرُوفِهِ أَسْقَطَ شُكْرَهُ
One who puts an obligation [on others] with his kind act drops [and forgoes] his gratitude

مَنْ مَنَّ بِمَعْرُوفِهِ فَقَدْ كَدَّرَ مَا صَنَعَهُ
One who puts obligation with his goodness has spoilt the good act that he has done

مَنْ مَنَّ بِإِحْسَانِهِ فَكَأَنَّهُ لَمْ يُحْسِنْ
Whoever puts an obligation with his favour, it is as if he has not done a favour

مَنْ مَنَّ بِمَعْرُوفِهِ أَفْسَدَهُ
One who puts obligation with his good action corrupts it

مِنْ فَضْلِ الرَّجُلِ أَنْ لَا يَمُنَّ بِمَا احْتَمَلَهُ حِلْمُهُ
It is from the merit of a man not to put the one whom he has been forbearing with under obligation

مَا كُدِّرَتِ الصَّنَائِعُ بِمِثْلِ الِامْتِنَانِ
Nothing spoils good actions like putting [others under] obligation

مَا أَهْنَأَ الْعَطَاءَ مَنْ مَنَّ بِهِ
He who puts an obligation [on others] has not made his grant pleasing

مَا هَنَأَ بِمَعْرُوفِهِ مَنْ كَثُرَ امْتِنَانُهُ
He who puts [others under] a lot of obligation has not made his good turn felicitous

مَا أَكْمَلَ الْمَعْرُوفَ مَنْ مَنَّ بِهِ
One who puts [others under] obligation with his good act has not perfected it

مِلَاكُ الْمَعْرُوفِ تَرْكُ الْمَنِّ بِهِ
The basis of goodness is abandoning obligation through it

وِزْرُ صَدَقَةِ الْمَنَّانِ يَغْلِبُ أَجْرَهُ
The sin of the charity given by the one who puts obligation is greater than its reward

لَا تَرْجُوَنَّ فَضْلَ مَنَّانٍ وَلَا تَأْتَمِنِ الْأَحْمَقَ وَالْخَوَّانَ
Never have hope in the favour of one who makes you feel obliged, and do not rely upon the fool and the traitor

One who puts [others under] obligation does no good to others

لَا مَعْرُوفَ مَعَ مَنٍّ
There is no good deed with obligation

لَا خَيْرَ فِي الْمَعْرُوفِ الْمُحْصَى
There is no virtue in the good turn that is reckoned [as a favour]

لَا لَذَّةَ لِصَنِيعَةِ مَنَّانٍ
There is no pleasure in the good turn of the obliger

لَا يَدْخُلُ الْجَنَّةَ خَبٌّ وَلَا مَنَّانٌ
Neither a swindler nor one who put others under obligation, will enter Paradise

لَا سَوْأَةَ أَقْبَحُ مِنَ الْمَنِّ
There is no evil quality more repulsive than [putting others under] obligation

يَا أَهْلَ الْمَعْرُوفِ وَالْإِحْسَانِ لَا تَمُنُّوا بِإِحْسَانِكُمْ فَإِنَّ الْإِحْسَانَ وَالْمَعْرُوفَ يُبْطِلُهُ قُبْحُ الِامْتِنَانِ
people of goodness and beneficence, do not put [others under] obligation with your favours for indeed favours and good turns are nullified by the repulsiveness of [putting others under] obligations

أَصْلِحْ إِذَا أَنْتَ أَفْسَدْتَ وَأَتْمِمْ إِذَا أَنْتَ أَحْسَنْتَ
Rectify when you have corrupted and complete [your good act] when you have done good

أَشَدُّ النَّاسِ عُقُوبَةً رَجُلٌ كَافَأَ الْإِحْسَانَ بِالْإِسَاءَةِ
The most severely punished of all people is one who recompenses good with evil

إِذَا صَنَعْتَ مَعْرُوفاً فَانْسَهُ
When you do a good turn [to someone], forget it

إِذَا صُنِعَ إِلَيْكَ مَعْرُوفٌ فَاذْكُرْ
When a good turn is done to you, recall it

جَمَالُ الْإِحْسَانِ تَرْكُ الِامْتِنَانِ
The beauty of benevolence is [in] relinquishing obligation

رَبُّ الْمَعْرُوفِ أَحْسَنُ مِنِ ابْتِلَائِهِ
Nurturing a good turn is better than starting it

سَلِ الْمَعْرُوفَ مَنْ يَنْسَاهُ وَاصْطَنِعْهُ إِلَى مَنْ يَذْكُرُهُ
Ask for good from one who forgets it and do good to the one who recalls it

قَدْ يَهْنَأُ الْعَطَاءُ لِلْإِنْجَازِ
Sometimes it is better to give in order to fulfil a promise [and not delay it]

كَمْ مِنْ مُسْتَدْرِجٍ بِالْإِحْسَانِ إِلَيْهِ
How many a person is gradually drawn to his destruction through the good that is done to him

الْمُكَافَاةُ عِتْقٌ
Recompense is liberation

مَنْ هَمَّ أَنْ يُكَافِيَ عَلَى الْمَعْرُوفِ [وَ عَجَزَ] فَقَدْ كَافَى [كَافَأَ]
One who endeavours to recompense the good that is done to him has indeed recompensed it

مَنْ شَكَرَ إِلَيْكَ مَعْرُوفَكَ فَقَدْ سَأَلَكَ
One who shows gratitude to you for your kindness (or the kindness of someone else) has [actually] requested you [for something]

مِنْ عَلَامَةِ الْكَرَمِ تَعْجِيلُ الْمَثُوبَةِ
One of the signs of nobleness is hastening in [giving] reward

مِنْ عَلَامَاتِ الْخِذْلَانِ اسْتِحْسَانُ الْقَبِيحِ
From the signs of being forsaken by Allah is considering that which is evil as something good

مِنْ سَعَادَةِ الْمَرْءِ أَنْ تَكُونَ صَنَائِعُهُ عِنْدَ مَنْ يَشْكُرُهُ وَمَعْرُوفُهُ عِنْدَ مَنْ لَا يَكْفُرُهُ
It is from the felicity of a person that his good turns are done to one who thanks him and his benevolence is shown to one who is not ungrateful to him

لَا تُسِئْ إِلَى مَنْ أَحْسَنَ إِلَيْكَ فَمَنْ أَسَاءَ إِلَى مَنْ أَحْسَنَ إِلَيْهِ مُنِعَ الْإِحْسَانَ
Extend your hand in recompense to the one who has done good to you, and if you are unable [to do this] then the very least you should do is thank him

لَا تَزْكُو إِلَّا عِنْدَ الْكِرَامِ الصَّنَائِعُ
Good turns do not thrive except with the honourable

لَا يَسْتَقِيمُ قَضَاءُ الْحَوَائِجِ إِلَّا بِثَلَاثٍ بِتَصْغِيرِهَا لِتَعْظُمَ وَسَتْرِهَا لِتَظْهَرَ وَتَعْجِيلِهَا لِتَهْنَأَ
The fulfilling of needs is not made righteous except by three things: by considering it to be small such that it becomes great, by hiding it such that it is made apparent [by Allah] and by expediting it such that it becomes felicitous
