إضاعة الإحسان
اصْطِنَاعُ الْكَفُورِ مِنْ أَعْظَمِ الْجُرْمِ
Doing good to an ingrate is from the greatest of crimes

الْكَرَامَةُ تُفْسِدُ مِنَ اللَّئِيمِ بِقَدْرِ [قَدْرَ] مَا تُصْلِحُ مِنَ الْكَرِيمِ
Benevolence from the wicked corrupts just as much as it reforms from the honourable

إِنَّ إِمْسَاكَ الْحَافِظِ أَجْمَلُ مِنْ بَذْلِ الْمُضَيِّعِ
Verily the withholding of preserver is more graceful than the giving of the squanderer

تَضْيِيعُ الْمَعْرُوفِ وَضْعُهُ فِي غَيْرِ عَرُوفٍ
Wasting benevolence is showing it to someone who does not comprehend [its value]

ظُلْمُ الْإِحْسَانِ وَضْعُهُ فِي غَيْرِ مَوْضِعِهِ

ظَلَمَ الْمَعْرُوفَ مَنْ وَضَعَهُ فِي غَيْرِ أَهْلِهِ
He who does a good turn to those who are undeserving of it has oppressed it

مَنْ أَسْدَى مَعْرُوفاً إِلَى غَيْرِ أَهْلِهِ ظَلَمَ مَعْرُوفَهُ
One who does good to the undeserving has wronged his goodness

لَا تَضَعَنَّ مَعْرُوفَكَ عِنْدَ غَيْرِ عَرُوفٍ
Never show your benevolence to the one who does not understand its value (or who is not good)

لَا خَيْرَ فِي الْمَعْرُوفِ إِلَى غَيْرِ عَرُوفٍ
There is no virtue in doing good to one who does not know its value

رَأْسُ الرَّذَائِلِ اصْطِنَاعُ الْأَرَاذِلِ
The pinnacle of depravity is doing good to the wicked

شَرُّ الْأَفْعَالِ مَا هَدَمَ الصَّنِيعَةَ
The worst action is that which destroys the good turn [that is done to others]

مَنْ لَمْ يُرَبِّ مَعْرُوفَهُ فَقَدْ ضَيَّعَهُ
One who does not nurture his good turn has indeed lost it

مَنْ لَمْ يُرَبِّ مَعْرُوفَهُ فَكَأَنَّهُ لَمْ يَصْنَعْهُ
Whoever does not nurture his favour, then it is as if he did not bestow it

مِنْ أَعْظَمِ الْفَجَائِعِ إِضَاعَةُ الصَّنَائِعِ
One of the greatest afflictions is wasting good turns [on the undeserving]

مَرَبَّةُ الْمَعْرُوفِ أَحْسَنُ [خَيْرٌ] مِنِ ابْتِدَائِهِ
Nurturing a good turn [and completing it] is better than starting it [anew]

وَاضِعُ مَعْرُوفِهِ عِنْدَ غَيْرِ مُسْتَحِقِّهِ مُضَيِّعٌ لَهُ
Whoever places his goodness with the one who does not deserve it has wasted it

لَا تَصْطَنِعْ مَنْ يَكْفُرُ بِرَّكَ
Do not do a good turn to the one who is ungrateful for your kindness

لَا تَصْحَبْ مَنْ فَاتَهُ الْعَقْلُ وَلَا تَصْطَنِعْ مَنْ خَافَهُ الْأَصْلُ فَإِنَّ مَنْ لَا عَقْلَ لَهُ يَضُرُّكَ مِنْ حَيْثُ يَرَى أَنَّهُ يَنْفَعُكَ وَمَنْ لَا أَصْلَ لَهُ يُسِيءُ إِلَى مَنْ يُحْسِنُ إِلَيْهِ
Do not accompany the one who has lost his mind and do not seek good from one who is betrayed by his roots, for the one who is insane will harm you while he thinks he is helping you and the one who does not have [virtuous] roots will do evil to the one who does good to him

لَا تَزْكُو الصَّنِيعَةُ مَعَ غَيْرِ أَصِيلٍ
Goodness does not thrive with the ignoble

There is no benevolence more misused than doing good to the ingrate
