الإحسان يسترق الإنسان

People are the followers of what they deem to be good

الْمَعْرُوفُ غُلٌّ لَا يَفُكُّهُ إِلَّا شُكْرٌ أَوْ مُكَافَاةٌ
Good turns are shackles that cannot be extricated except through gratitude or requital

أَحْسِنْ تَسْتَرِقَّ
Do good and you shall enthral

أَحْسِنْ إِلَى مَنْ شِئْتَ وَكُنْ أَمِيرَهُ
Show kindness to whomever you wish and you will become his master

أَطِلْ يَدَكَ فِي مُكَافَاةِ مَنْ أَحْسَنَ إِلَيْكَ فَإِنْ لَمْ تَقْدِرْ فَلَا أَقَلَّ مِنْ أَنْ تَشْكُرَهُ
Extend your hand in recompense to the one who has done good to you, and if you are unable [to do this] then the very least you should do is thank him

إِنَّ أَفْضَلَ الْأَمْوَالِ مَا اسْتُرِقَّ بِهِ حُرٌّ وَاسْتُحِقَّ بِهِ أَجْرٌ
Indeed the best wealth is that by which the freeman is enthralled and [by which] reward is earned

Through righteousness the free man is owned

Through kindness, hearts are owned

Through kindness, freemen are owned

بِالْإِحْسَانِ تُسْتَرَقُّ الرِّقَابُ
Through kindness, people are enthralled

عِنْدَ تَوَاتُرِ الْبِرِّ وَالْإِحْسَانِ يُتَعَبَّدُ الْحُرُّ
By successive acts of kindness and benevolence, the free man is enslaved

عَجِبْتُ لِمَنْ يَشْتَرِي الْعَبِيدَ بِمَالِهِ فَيُعْتِقُهُمْ كَيْفَ لَا يَشْتَرِي الْأَحْرَارَ بِإِحْسَانِهِ فَيَسْتَرِقَّهُمْ
I am amazed at the one who buys slaves with his wealth, how can he not buy the freemen with his benevolence, thereby enthralling them

فِي كُلِّ صَنِيعَةٍ امْتِنَانٌ
In every good turn there is indebtedness

كَمْ مِنْ إِنْسَانٍ اسْتَعْبَدَهُ إِحْسَانٌ
How many a human being has been enslaved by benevolence!

لَقَدْ أَتْعَبَكَ مَنْ أَكْرَمَكَ إِنْ كُنْتَ كَرِيماً وَلَقَدْ أَرَاحَكَ مَنْ أَهَانَكَ إِنْ كُنْتَ حَلِيماً
The one who has honoured you has made you uncomfortable if you are noble-minded and the one who has offended you has made you comfortable if you are forbearing

لَنْ يُتَعَبَّدَ الْحُرُّ حَتَّى يُزَالَ عَنْهُ الضُّرُّ
The free man will never become enslaved until distress is removed from him

لَنْ يُسْتَرَقَّ الْإِنْسَانُ حَتَّى يَغْمُرَهُ الْإِحْسَانُ
The human being is not enthralled until he is engulfed by favour

مَنْ قَضَى حَقَّ مَنْ لَا يَقْضِي حَقَّهُ فَقَدْ عَبَّدَهُ
Whoever fulfils the rights of one who does not fulfil his rights has enslaved him

مَنْ قَبِلَ مَعْرُوفاً فَقَدْ مَلَكَ مُسْدِيهِ إِلَيْهِ رِقَّهُ
Whoever accepts a good turn has made the one who rendered it to him his master

مَنْ قَبِلَ مَعْرُوفَكَ فَقَدْ بَاعَكَ عِزَّتَهُ وَمُرُوءَتِهِ
One who accepts your good turn has sold you his honour and magnanimity

مَنْ قَبِلَ مَعْرُوفَكَ فَقَدْ أَذَلَّ لَكَ جَلَالَتَهُ وَعِزَّتَهُ
One who accepts your good turn has humbled his prestige and honour before you

مَا اسْتُرِقَّتِ الْأَعْنَاقُ بِمِثْلِ [بَذْلِ] الْإِحْسَانِ
Nothing enthrals people like doing [them] favours

مَا اسْتُعْبِدَ الْكِرَامُ بِمِثْلِ الْإِكْرَامِ
Nothing enthrals the honourable ones like benevolence
