آفَةُ السَّخَاءِ الْمَنُّ
The bane of generosity is obligation

The impediments of divine decree are the bane of eminence

The bane of giving is procrastination

آفَةُ الْجُودِ الْفَقْرُ
The bane of generosity is poverty

آفَةُ الْجُودِ التَّبْذِيرُ
The bane of generosity is wastefulness

أَحْيُوا الْمَعْرُوفَ بِإِمَاتَتِهِ فَإِنَّ الْمِنَّةَ تَهْدِمُ الصَّنِيعَةَ
Give life to the benevolent act by killing it [ieforgetting it], for verily the sense of obligation destroys a good turn

أَفْضَلُ الْعَطَاءِ تَرْكُ الْمَنِّ
The best gift is forgoing obligation

الْكَرَمُ بَرِيءٌ مِنَ الْحَسَدِ
Nobleness is [being] free from jealousy

الطَّعَامُ يُؤْكَلُ عَلَى ثَلَاثَةِ أَضْرُبٍ مَعَ الْإِخْوَانِ بِالسُّرُورِ وَمَعَ الْفُقَرَاءِ بِالْإِيثَارِ وَمَعَ أَبْنَاءِ الدُّنْيَا بِالْمُرُوءَةِ
Food is eaten and shared with three groups [in three situations]: alongside brothers with happiness, alongside the poor with selflessness and alongside the children of this world with magnanimity

الْكَرِيمُ يَزْدَجِرُ عَمَّا يَفْتَخِرُ بِهِ اللَّئِيمُ
A noble-minded person is repulsed by that which the wicked take pride in

الْحَجَرُ الْغَصْبُ فِي الدَّارِ رَهْنٌ لِخَرَابِهَا
ne usurped stone in a house is the guaranty of its ruin

الْكَرِيمُ يَجْفُو إِذَا عُنِّفَ وَيَلِينُ إِذَا اسْتُعْطِفَ
The munificent one cuts off his favour when he is approached harshly and is soft [and kind] when he is entreated [politely]

الْكَرِيمُ يَرْفَعُ نَفْسَهُ فِي كُلِّ مَا أَسْدَاهُ عَنْ حُسْنِ الْمُجَازَاةِ
The noble-minded person raises himself above [the expectation of] rewards in everything good that he does

الْكَرِيمُ إِذَا احْتَاجَ إِلَيْكَ أَعْفَاكَ وَإِذَا احْتَجْتَ إِلَيْهِ كَفَاكَ
When a noble-minded person needs you he excuses you [from helping him] and when you need him he suffices you

الْجُودُ مِنْ غَيْرِ خَوْفٍ وَلَا رَجَاءِ مُكَافَاةٍ حَقِيقَةُ الْجُودِ
Generosity without fear or hope of recompense is true generosity

الْمَنْعُ الْجَمِيلُ أَحْسَنُ مِنَ الْوَعْدِ الطَّوِيلِ
A polite refusal is better than a protracted promise

ابْذُلْ مَعْرُوفَكَ وَكُفَّ أَذَاكَ
Extend your goodness and do no harm

أَعْطِ مَا تُعْطِيهِ مُعَجَّلًا مُهَنَّأً وَإِنْ مَنَعْتَ فَلْيَكُنْ فِي إِجْمَالٍ وَإِعْذَارٍ
Give whatever you are giving expeditiously and beneficially, and if you refuse then let it be with politeness and apology

ابْذُلْ مَالَكَ لِمَنْ بَذَلَ لَكَ وَجْهَهُ فَإِنَّ بَذْلَ الْوَجْهِ لَا يُوَازِيهِ [لَا يُوَازِنُهُ] شَيْءٌ
Give your wealth generously to the one who has sacrificed his self-respect for you, for indeed the sacrificing of self-respect cannot be matched by anything

أَفْضَلُ الْكَرَمِ إِتْمَامُ النِّعَمِ
The most excellent munificence is completing [one’s] favours

أَفْضَلُ الْجُودِ بَذْلُ الْمَوْجُودِ
The greatest generosity is being open-handed with whatever is available

أَفْضَلُ الْجُودِ إِيصَالُ الْحُقُوقِ إِلَى أَهْلِهَا
The greatest generosity is delivering the rights to their [rightful] owners

أَفْضَلُ الْجُودِ مَا كَانَ عَنْ عُسْرَةٍ
The greatest generosity is giving despite [facing] hard times

إِنَّ سَخَاءَ النَّفْسِ عَمَّا فِي أَيْدِي النَّاسِ لَأَفْضَلُ مِنْ سَخَاءِ الْبَذْلِ
Verily the generosity of keeping oneself away from that which others possess is better than the generosity of giving

إِذَا أَعْطَيْتَ فَأَوْجِزْ
When you [wish to] give, be quick

إِذَا أَطْعَمْتَ [طمعت] فَأَشْبِعْ
When you feed [someone] then satiate him

بَذْلُ الْعَطَاءِ زَكَاةُ النَّعْمَاءِ
Giving generously is the alms-tax of blessings

بَذْلُ الْجَاهِ زَكَاةُ الْجَاهِ
Being generous with power [and fulfilling the needs of the people with it] is the alms-tax of power

خَيْرُ السَّخَاءِ مَا صَادَفَ مَوْضِعَ الْحَاجَةِ
The best generosity is that which corresponds to the situations of need

ظَفَرُ الْكَرِيمِ يُنْجِي
The success of a noble-minded person brings deliverance

غَايَةُ الْجُودِ بَذْلُ الْمَوْجُودِ
The highest extent of generosity is giving [from] whatever is available

كَفَى بِالْمَيْسُورِ رِفْداً
It is enough of a donation to give what is [readily] available

كَمَالُ الْعَطِيَّةِ تَعْجِيلُهَا
The perfection of giving is in expediting it

لَيْسَ مِنْ عَادَةِ الْكِرَامِ تَأْخِيرُ الْإِنْعَامِ
It is not from the practice of the virtuous to delay the bestowal of favours

مَنْ لَمْ تُقَوِّمْهُ الْكَرَامَةُ قَوَّمَتْهُ الْإِهَانَةُ
One who is not set aright by high esteem is put right by indignity

مَنْ قَبِلَ عَطَاءَكَ [عَطَاكَ] فَقَدْ أَعَانَكَ عَلَى الْكَرَمِ
One who accepts your gift has [actually] assisted you in gaining honour

مَنْ أَعْطَى فِي غَيْرِ الْحُقُوقِ قَصَّرَ عَنِ الْحُقُوقِ
One who gives in cases that are undeserving fails to give [the rights] to those who are deserving

مِنَ الْكَرَمِ إِتْمَامُ النِّعَمِ
Completion of favours is part of munificence

مِنْ كَمَالِ الْكَرَمِ تَعْجِيلُ الْمَثُوبَةِ
From the perfection of munificence is hastening [to give] reward

مِنْ تَمَامِ الْكَرَمِ إِتْمَامُ النِّعَمِ
Completing [one’s] favours is from the perfection of munificence

مِنَ الِاقْتِصَادِ سَخَاءٌ بِغَيْرِ سَرَفٍ وَمُرُوَّةٌ مِنْ غَيْرِ تَلَفٍ
Being generous without extravagance and magnanimous without wastefulness is part of moderation

مَا أَوْحَشَ كَرِيمٌ
The munificent person is never deserted

لَا تَسْتَكْثِرَنَّ الْعَطَاءَ وَإِنْ كَثُرَ فَإِنَّ حُسْنَ الثَّنَاءِ أَكْثَرُ مِنْهُ
Never regard what you give as too much, even if it is plenty, for indeed the good praise [you will get for your generosity] will be greater than it

لَا تَسْتَعْظِمَنَّ النَّوَالَ وَإِنْ عَظُمَ فَإِنَّ قَدْرَ السُّؤَالِ أَعْظَمُ مِنْهُ
Never regard what you give as great, even if it is substantial, for indeed the extent of [humiliation undergone through] begging is greater than that

لَا تَسْتَحْيِ مِنْ إِعْطَاءِ الْقَلِيلِ فَإِنَّ الْحِرْمَانَ أَقَلُّ مِنْهُ
Do not be ashamed of giving little, for not giving at all is even less than that

لَا تَسْتَكْثِرَنَّ الْكَثِيرَ مِنْ نَوَالِكَ فَإِنَّكَ أَكْثَرُ مِنْهُ
Never regard the abundance of what you have given to be much, for you are [in possession of] even more than that

لَا سَخَاءَ مَعَ عَدَمٍ
There can be no generosity with nothingness

يَحْتَاجُ ذُو النَّائِلِ إِلَى السَّائِلِ
The charitable one needs the beggar
