المال مادة الشهوات و الرذائل
الْمَالُ مَادَّةُ الشَّهَوَاتِ
Wealth is the object of desires

Wealth strengthens one’s hopes

Wealth corrupts the outcomes and extends the [false] hopes

الْمَالُ فِتْنَةُ النَّفْسِ وَنَهْبُ الرَّزَايَا
Wealth is the tribulation of the soul and the plunder of calamities

رُبَّ غَنِيٍّ أَذَلُّ مِنْ نَقَدٍ [مِنْ فَقِيرٍ]
At times a rich person may be lowlier than an ugly sheep

كَثْرَةُ الْمَالِ تُفْسِدُ الْقُلُوبَ وَتُنْشِئُ [يُنْسِي] الذُّنُوبَ
Increased wealth corrupts the hearts and gives rise to sins

مَنْ كَرُمَ عَلَيْهِ الْمَالُ هَانَتْ عَلَيْهِ الرِّجَالُ
One who considers wealth to be precious, regards people as insignificant

رُوِيَ أَنَّهُ ع مَرَّ عَلَى مَزْبَلَةٍ فَقَالَ هَذَا مَا كُنْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ بِالْأَمْسِ تَتَنَافَسُونَ
While passing by some filth in a cesspit, he (‘a) said: This is what you were competing for yesterdayAnd in another narration, he said: This is what the misers were stingy with
