أَلَا وَإِنَّ مِنَ الْبَلَاءِ الْفَاقَةَ وَأَشَدُّ مِنَ الْفَاقَةِ مَرَضُ الْبَدَنِ وَأَشَدُّ مِنْ مَرَضِ الْبَدَنِ مَرَضُ الْقَلْبِ
Indeed destitution is an affliction, and worse than destitution is sickness of the body, and worse than bodily ailment is the sickness of the heart

Adversity degrades morals and alienates friends

إِنَّ الْفَقْرَ مَذَلَّةٌ لِلنَّفْسِ مَدْهَشَةٌ لِلْعَقْلِ جَالِبٌ لِلْهُمُومِ
Verily poverty is disgracer for the soul, a confounder of the intellect, and a bringer of sorrows

إِنِ افْتَقَرَ قَنَطَ وَوَهَنَ
He (‘a) said about the one whom he censured: if he becomes poor, he despairs

ثَلَاثٌ هُنَّ الْمُحْرِقَاتُ الْمُوبِقَاتُ فَقْرٌ بَعْدَ غِنًى وَذُلٌّ بَعْدَ عِزٍّ وَفَقْدُ الْأَحِبَّةِ [الْأَحِبَّاءِ]
Three things break one’s spirit and cause downfall: poverty after wealth, humiliation after dignity and loss of loved ones

ضَرُورَةُ الْفَقْرِ تَبْعَثُ عَلَى فَظِيعِ [قَطْعِ] الْأَمْرِ
The plight of poverty impels one towards a despicable affair

الْفَقْرُ يُخْرِسُ الْفَطِنَ عَنْ حُجَّتِهِ
Poverty disables the astute one from [presenting] his argument

الْفَقِيرُ فِي الْوَطَنِ مُمْتَهَنٌ
The poor person is [like] a stranger (or is scorned) in his hometown

Poverty in one’s homeland is like being a stranger in it

الْمُقِلُّ غَرِيبٌ فِي بَلْدَتِهِ
The needy person is a stranger in his own homeland

لَيْسَ فِي الْغُرْبَةِ عَارٌ إِنَّمَا الْعَارُ فِي الْوَطَنِ الِافْتِقَارُ
There is no shame in being far away from one’s hometown; the only shame is being indigent in one’s one hometown
