الذُّلُّ فِي [إِلَى] مَسْأَلَةِ النَّاسِ
Humiliation [and disgrace] is in asking from people

الْمَسْأَلَةُ مِفْتَاحُ الْفَقْرِ
Begging is the key to poverty

الْجُوعُ خَيْرٌ مِنْ ذُلِّ الْخُضُوعِ
Hunger is better than the humiliation of subjugation

السُّؤَالُ يُضْعِفُ لِسَانَ الْمُتَكَلِّمِ وَيَكْسِرُ قَلْبَ الشُّجَاعِ الْبَطَلِ وَيُوقِفُ الْحُرَّ الْعَزِيزَ مَوْقِفَ الْعَبْدِ الذَّلِيلِ وَيُذْهِبُ بَهَاءَ الْوَجْهِ وَيَمْحَقُ الرِّزْقَ
Begging weakens the tongue of the speaker, breaks the heart of the courageous hero, puts the free honourable one in the position of a humbled slave, takes away the radiance of one’s face and wipes out one’s sustenance

بَذْلُ مَاءِ الْوَجْهِ فِي الطَّلَبِ أَعْظَمُ مِنْ قَدْرِ الْحَاجَةِ وَإِنْ عَظُمَتْ وَأُنْجِحَ فِيهَا الطَّلَبُ
Sacrificing one’s dignity by begging is greater [in value] than the extent of one’s need, even if it is great and even if it is granted

الْمَسْأَلَةُ طَوْقُ الْمَذَلَّةِ تَسْلُبُ الْعَزِيزَ عِزَّهُ وَالْحَسِيبَ حَسَبَهُ
Begging is the collar of humiliation, it takes the honour away from the honourable and the stature away from the noble

أَشَدُّ مِنَ الْمَوْتِ طَلَبُ الْحَاجَةِ مِنْ غَيْرِ أَهْلِهَا
Seeking one’s need from he who is not worthy [of being asked] is harder than death

إِنَّ قَدْرَ السُّؤَالِ أَكْثَرُ مِنْ قِيمَةِ النَّوَالِ فَلَا تَسْتَكْثِرُوا مَا أَعْطَيْتُمُوهُ فَإِنَّهُ لَنْ يُوَازِيَ قَدْرَ السُّؤَالِ
Verily the value of asking is greater than the worth of what is given, so do not regard that which you give as much, for it will never be equal to the humiliation of asking

آفَةُ الطَّلَبِ عَدَمُ النَّجَاحِ
The bane of asking [others] is lack of success [in getting what one asks for]

حُسْنُ الْيَأْسِ أَجْمَلُ مِنْ ذُلِّ الطَّلَبِ
The virtue of loss of hope [in others] is better than the humiliation of asking [for their help]

كَفَى بِالْإِلْحَاحِ مَحْرَمَةً
Importunity is enough as a [reason for] deprivation

كَثْرَةُ الْإِلْحَاحِ تُوجِبُ الْمَنْعَ
Excessive importunity leads to refusal

كَثْرَةُ إِلْحَاحِ الرَّجُلِ تُوجِبُ حِرْمَانَهُ
The excessive importunity of a man leads to his deprivation

مَنْ سَأَلَ مَا لَا يَسْتَحِقُّ قُوبِلَ بِالْحِرْمَانِ
One who asks for that which he does not deserve is faced with deprivation

مَنْ تَكَرَّرَ سُؤَالُهُ لِلنَّاسِ ضَجَرُوهُ
One who repeats his request to the people, they get irritated by him

مَنْ طَلَبَ مَا فِي أَيْدِي النَّاسِ حَقَّرُوهُ
Whoever seeks that which is in the possession of people, they debase him [for it]

مَنْ أَلَحَّ فِي سُؤَالِهِ دَعَا إِلَى حِرْمَانِهِ
One who is importunate in his asking invites his own deprivation

وَجْهُكَ مَاءٌ جَامِدٌ يُقَطِّرُهُ السُّؤَالُ فَانْظُرْ عِنْدَ مَنْ تُقَطِّرُهُ
Your countenance is like frozen water that is melted by asking; so [be careful and] consider whose presence you are melting it in

لَا ذُلَّ كَالطَّلَبِ
There is no humiliation like asking [for something from others]

يَنْبَغِي لِلْعَاقِلِ أَنْ يَكْتَسِبَ بِمَالِهِ الْمَحْمَدَةَ وَيَصُونَ نَفْسَهُ عَنِ الْمَسْأَلَةِ
It behoves the intelligent person to earn praise through his wealth and to preserve himself from asking others
