كُلُّ مَا زَادَ عَلَى الِاقْتِصَادِ إِسْرَافٌ
Everything that exceeds moderation is extravagance

الْإِسْرَافُ مَذْمُومٌ فِي كُلِّ شَيْءٍ إِلَّا فِي أَفْعَالِ الْبِرِّ
Extravagance is blameworthy in everything except in doing good deeds

أَلَا وَإِنَّ إِعْطَاءَ هَذَا الْمَالِ فِي غَيْرِ حَقِّهِ تَبْذِيرٌ وَإِسْرَافٌ
Verily giving this wealth where it has no right to be given is wastefulness and extravagance

أَقْبَحُ الْبَذْلِ السَّرَفُ
The ugliest [form of] giving is extravagance

حَلُّوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ بِالْعَفَافِ وَتَجَنَّبُوا [اجْتَنِبُوا] التَّبْذِيرَ وَالْإِسْرَافَ
Noble traits [and deeds] are not complete except with chastity and self-sacrifice

ذَرِ الْإِسْرَافَ مُقْتَصِداً وَاذْكُرْ فِي الْيَوْمِ غَداً
Abandon extravagance by economizing, and recall [your] tomorrow today

ذَرِ السَّرَفَ فَإِنَّ الْمُسْرِفَ لَا يُحْمَدُ جُودُهُ وَلَا يُرْحَمُ فَقْرُهُ
Eschew extravagance, for neither is the generosity of the extravagant praised nor is his indigence sympathized [with]

فَدَعِ الْإِسْرَافَ مُقْتَصِداً وَاذْكُرْ فِي الْيَوْمِ غَداً وَأَمْسِكْ مِنَ الْمَالِ بِقَدْرِ ضَرُورَتِكَ وَقَدِّمِ الْفَضْلَ لِيَوْمِ حَاجَتِكَ
Then shun extravagance by economizing, and recall today [what you will need] tomorrow; hold on to wealth [only] to the extent of your necessity and send forth the surplus for the day when you will need it

Too much extravagance destroys

There is no honour in extravagance

مِنَ الْمُرُوَّةِ أَنْ تَقْتَصِدَ فَلَا تُسْرِفَ وَتَعِدَ فَلَا تُخْلِفَ
It is part of magnanimity for you to be moderate and not extravagant, and to keep the promises you make

وَيْحَ الْمُسْرِفِ مَا أَبْعَدَهُ عَنْ صَلَاحِ نَفْسِهِ وَاسْتِدْرَاكِ أَمْرِهِ
Woe be to the extravagant! How far he is from reforming himself and setting right his affair!
