الْحِلْمُ رَأْسُ الرِّئَاسَةِ
Forbearance is the cornerstone of [good] leadership

Forgiveness is the ornament of power

الْإِنْصَافُ زَيْنُ الْإِمْرَةِ
Equity is the ornament of [power and] authority

اضْرِبْ خَادِمَكَ إِذَا عَصَى اللَّهَ وَاعْفُ عَنْهُ إِذَا عَصَاكَ
Beat your servant when he disobeys Allah but forgive him when he disobeys you

تَجَاوَزْ مَعَ الْقُدْرَةِ وَأَحْسِنْ مَعَ الدَّوْلَةِ تَكْمُلْ لَكَ السِّيَادَةُ
Overlook despite having power [to punish] and do good while possessing authority, [for by this] your mastery will become complete

ذُو الشَّرَفِ لَا تُبْطِرُهُ مَنْزِلَةٌ نَالَهَا وَإِنْ عَظُمَتْ كَالْجَبَلِ الَّذِي لَا تُزَعْزِعُهُ الرِّيَاحُ وَالدَّنِيُّ تُبْطِرُهُ أَدْنَى مَنْزِلَةٍ [نزلة] كَالْكَلَإِ الَّذِي يُحَرِّكُهُ مَرُّ النَّسِيمِ
The honourable person is not made reckless by the status he attains, even if it becomes as great as a mountain that is not shaken by strongest winds; and the lowly is made careless by the most inferior position, just as the grass that is moved by the passing breeze

ذَاكَ يَنْفَعُ سِلْمُهُ وَلَا يُخَافُ ظُلْمُهُ إِذَا قَالَ فَعَلَ وَإِذَا وُلِّيَ عَدَلَ
He (‘a) praised a man saying: This is one whose peacefulness benefits and injustice is not feared from himWhen he says, he does and when he put in charge, he is just

زَكَاةُ الْقُدْرَةِ الْإِنْصَافُ
The alms-tax of power is even-handedness

Forgiveness is the alms-tax of power

الظَّفَرُ شَافِعُ الْمُذْنِبِ
Victory is the intercessor of the guilty

الطَّمَعُ يُذِلُّ الْأَمِيرَ
Covetousness debases the commander

آلَةُ الرِّيَاسَةِ سَعَةُ الصَّدْرِ
The instrument of leadership is [patience and] large-heartedness

الْعَفْوُ مَعَ الْقُدْرَةِ جُنَّةٌ مِنْ عَذَابِ اللَّهِ سُبْحَانَهُ
Forgiveness despite [having the] power [to exact revenge] is a shield from the punishment of Allah, the Glorified

أَفْضَلُ الْمُلُوكِ أَعَفُّهُمْ نَفْساً
The best king is the one who has the most continent soul

دَوْلَةُ اللَّئِيمِ تَكْشِفُ مَسَاوِيَهُ وَمَعَايِبَهُ
The authority of a vile person manifests his evil traits and flaws

دَوْلَةُ الْكَرِيمِ تُظْهِرُ مَنَاقِبَهُ
The authority of a noble-minded person manifests his positive attributes

رَأْسُ السِّيَاسَةِ اسْتِعْمَالُ الرِّفْقِ
The cornerstone of politics is employing leniency

زَيْنُ الرِّيَاسَةِ الْإِفْضَالُ
The embellishment of leadership is bestowing favours

عِنْدَ كَمَالِ الْقُدْرَةِ تَظْهَرُ فَضِيلَةُ الْعَفْوِ
It is when one possesses complete authority that the virtue of forgiveness becomes manifest

مَنْ تَجَبَّرَ عَلَى مَنْ دُونَهُ كُسِرَ
One who is haughty with the one who is below him gets broken [and pulled down from his position]

مَنِ اسْتَطَالَ عَلَى النَّاسِ بِقُدْرَتِهِ سُلِبَ الْقُدْرَةَ
Whoever is haughty with people because of his authority, his authority will get stripped away
