الْأَخْذُ عَلَى الْعَدُوِّ بِالْفَضْلِ أَحَدُ الظَّفَرَيْنِ
Treating the enemy with kindness is one of the two victories

الِاسْتِصْلَاحُ لِلْأَعْدَاءِ بِحُسْنِ الْمَقَالِ وَجَمِيلِ الْأَفْعَالِ أَهْوَنُ مِنْ مُلَاقَاتِهِمْ وَمُغَالَبَتِهِمْ بِمَضِيضِ الْقِتَالِ
Reforming [and reconciliation with] the enemies through good words and beautiful actions is easier than facing them and combating them with the torment of battle

زَكَاةُ الظَّفَرِ الْإِحْسَانُ
The alms-tax of victory is benevolence

الرَّأْيُ بِتَحْصِينِ الْأَسْرَارِ
The [right] opinion is [acquired] by protecting secrets

أَنْجَحُ الْأُمُورِ مَا أَحَاطَ بِهِ الْكِتْمَانُ
The most successful matters are those that have been shrouded in secrecy

عَثْرَةُ الِاسْتِرْسَالِ لَا تُسْتَقَالُ
The slip up of impudence cannot be pardoned

قَدْ يَخْدَعُ الْأَعْدَاءُ
At times enemies may deceive [and pretend to be well-wishers]

مَنْ نَامَ عَنْ عَدُوِّهِ أَنْبَهَتْهُ [نَبَّهَتْهُ] الْمَكَايِدُ
One who sleeps, neglecting his enemy, is jolted awake by [his] crafty schemes

مَنْ أَبْغَضَكَ أَغْرَاكَ
One who hates you incites you [to wrongdoing]

لَا تَغْتَرَّنَّ بِمُجَامَلَةِ الْعَدُوِّ فَإِنَّهُ كَالْمَاءِ وَإِنْ أُطِيلَ إِسْخَانُهُ بِالنَّارِ لَا يَمْتَنِعُ [لَمْ يَمْنَعْ] مِنْ إِطْفَائِهَا
Do not be fooled by the courteousness of the enemy for indeed he is like water, even if its heating by fire is prolonged, it is not prevented from extinguishing it

اسْتَعْمِلْ مَعَ عَدُوِّكَ مُرَاقَبَةَ الْإِمْكَانِ وَانْتِهَازَ الْفُرْصَةِ تَظْفَرْ
With regards to your enemy, be on the lookout for possibility [of defeating him] and seize opportunity, you will be [thus become] triumphant

كَافِلُ النَّصْرِ الصَّبْرُ
The guarantor of succour is patience

لَا تُغَالِبْ مَنْ لَا تَقْدِرُ عَلَى دَفْعِهِ
Do not pick a fight with one whom you cannot repel

لَا تُوقِعْ بِالْعَدُوِّ قَبْلَ الْقُدْرَةِ
Do not face your adversary before you are powerful enough [to defeat him]

إِنْ وَقَعَتْ بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَ عَدُوِّكَ قِصَّةٌ عَقَدْتَ بِهَا صُلْحاً وَأَلْبَسْتَهُ بِهَا ذِمَّةً فَحُطْ عَهْدَكَ بِالْوَفَاءِ وَارْعَ ذِمَّتَكَ بِالْأَمَانَةِ وَاجْعَلْ نَفْسَكَ جُنَّةٌ بَيْنَكَ وَبَيْنَ مَا أَعْطَيْتَ مِنْ عَهْدِكَ
If something happens between you and your enemy, which leads you to a truce and the enacting of a peace treaty, then preserve your pact with loyalty and guard your pledge with trust, and make your soul a shield between you and that which you have pledged

رُدَّ الْحَجَرَ مِنْ حَيْثُ جَاءَكَ فَإِنَّهُ لَا يُرَدُّ الشَّرُّ إِلَّا بِالشَّرِّ
Return the stone from whence it came to you, for indeed evil is not repulsed except by evil

مَنْ أَظْهَرَ عَدَاوَتَهُ قَلَّ كَيْدُهُ
Whoever manifests his enmity, his stratagems are reduced

مَنْ دَارَى أَضْدَادَهُ أَمِنَ الْمَحَارِبَ
One who is courteous with his adversaries is safe from battles

لَا تَسْتَصْغِرَنَّ عَدُوّاً وَإِنْ ضَعُفَ
Never underestimate an enemy, even if he is weak

لَا تُحَارِبْ مَنْ يَعْتَصِمُ بِالدِّينِ فَإِنَّ مُغَالِبَ الدِّينِ مَحْرُوبٌ
Do not fight against the one who seeks refuge in religion, for one who combats religion is ruined

لَا تُغَالِبْ مَنْ يَسْتَظْهِرُ بِالْحَقِّ فَإِنَّ مُغَالِبَ الْحَقِّ مَغْلُوبٌ
Do not combat the one who seeks the support of truth, for the one who fights the truth is [always] defeated

لَا تَعَرَّضْ لِعَدُوِّكَ وَهُوَ مُقْبِلٌ فَإِنَّ إِقْبَالَهُ يُعِينُهُ عَلَيْكَ وَلَا تَعَرَّضْ لَهُ وَهُوَ مُدْبِرٌ فَإِنَّ إِدْبَارَهُ يَكْفِيكَ أَمْرُهُ
Do not confront your enemy while he is charging towards you, for indeed his charge will aid him to overcome you and do not confront him when he is fleeing away from you, for indeed his flight is sufficient for you in dealing with him

الْفِرَارُ فِي أَوَانِهِ يَعْدِلُ الظَّفَرَ فِي زَمَانِهِ
Fleeing at the right moment is equivalent to victory in its time

طَيِّبُوا عَنْ أَنْفُسِكُمْ نَفْساً وَامْشُوا إِلَى الْمَوْتِ مَشْياً سَجْحاً
Defend [yourselves] with the edge of blades, charge forward [against the enemy] with your swords, give up your lives [for the sake of Allah] and walk towards death with calm

عَضُّوا عَلَى النَّوَاجِذِ فَإِنَّهُ أَنْبَا لِلسُّيُوفِ عَنِ الْهَامِ
Grit your back teeth, for this makes the swords skip off the skull

غُضُّوا الْأَبْصَارَ فِي الْحُرُوبِ فَإِنَّهُ أَرْبَطُ لِلْجَأْشِ وَأَسْكَنُ لِلْقُلُوبِ
Cast down your gaze in battles, for this will make you calmer and cause your hearts to be more tranquil

قَدِّمُوا الدَّارِعَ وَأَخِّرُوا الْحَاسِرَ وَعَضُّوا عَلَى الْأَضْرَاسِ فَإِنَّهُ أَنْبَا لِلسُّيُوفِ عَنِ الْهَامِ
Put the armoured man forward and the unarmoured one behind, and grit your teeth because this will make the swords skip off the skulls

نَافِحُوا بِالظَّبَى وَصِلُوا السُّيُوفَ بِالْخُطَى وَطَيِّبُوا عَنْ أَنْفُسِكُمْ نَفْساً وَامْشُوا إِلَى الْمَوْتِ مَشْياً سَجْحاً

لَا تَدْعُوَنَّ إِلَى مُبَارَزَةٍ وَإِنْ دُعِيتَ إِلَيْهَا فَأَجِبْ فَإِنَّ الدَّاعِيَ إِلَيْهَا بَاغٍ وَالْبَاغِيَ مَصْرُوعٌ
Never seek to challenge anyone in combat, but if you are challenged, then respond; for the one who seeks it is an aggressor, and the aggressor is struck down

لَا تَشْتَدَّنَّ عَلَيْكُمْ فَرَّةٌ [زَفْرَةٌ] بَعْدَهَا كَرَّةٌ وَلَا جَوْلَةٌ بَعْدَهَا صَوْلَةٌ وَأَعْطُوا السُّيُوفَ حُقُوقَهَا وَقُصُّوا لِلْحَرْبِ مَصَارِعَهَا وَاذْمِرُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ عَلَى الطَّعْنِ الدَّعْسِيِّ وَالضَّرْبِ الطِّلَخْفِيِّ [التلحفي] وَأَمِيتُوا الْأَصْوَاتِ فَإِنَّهُ أَطْرَدُ لِلْفَشَلِ
Do not let the fleeing which is followed by return and the retreat that is followed by attack bear down on youGive the swords their due right and prepare a place for the fallen [soldiers]Embolden yourselves to charge with intensity and strike with full force, and silence the voices, as this dispels cowardice

الْتَوُوا فِي أَطْرَافِ الرِّمَاحِ فَإِنَّهُ أَمْوَرُ لِلْأَسِنَّةِ
Twist the sides of the spears [while attacking], for this makes the spearheads move with more force
