السؤال
الْقُلُوبُ أَقْفَالٌ وَمَفَاتِحُهَا السُّؤَالُ
The hearts are locks and their keys are inquiry

اسْأَلْ تَعْلَمْ
Ask and you will learn

مَنْ سَأَلَ عَلِمَ
One who asks, learns

مَنِ اسْتَرْشَدَ عَلِمَ
One who seeks right guidance becomes knowledgeable [about it]

مَنْ سَأَلَ اسْتَفَادَ
One who asks, benefits

مَنْ أَحْسَنَ السُّؤَالَ عَلِمَ
One who asks properly, learns

سَلْ عَمَّا لَا بُدَّ لَكَ مِنْ عِلْمِهِ وَلَا تُعْذِرُ فِي جَهْلِهِ
Ask about that which you must know and cannot be excused for being ignorant about

مَنْ عَلِمَ أَحْسَنَ السُّؤَالَ
One who has knowledge asks good [and pertinent] questions

مَنْ سَأَلَ فِي صِغَرِهِ أَجَابَ فِي كِبَرِهِ
One who asks in his young age, answers in his old age

لَا يُؤْخَذُ الْعِلْمُ إِلَّا مِنْ أَرْبَابِهِ
Knowledge is not acquired except from its masters

لَا تَسْأَلَنَّ عَمَّا لَمْ يَكُنْ فَفِي الَّذِي قَدْ كَانَ عِلْمٌ كَافٍ
Never ask about that which has not [yet] happened, for in that which has already come about there is enough knowledge [that one can gain]

إِذَا سَأَلْتَ فَاسْأَلْ تَفَقُّهاً وَلَا تَسْأَلْ تَعَنُّتاً فَإِنَّ الْجَاهِلَ الْمُتَعَلِّمَ شَبِيهٌ بِالْعَالِمِ وَإِنَّ الْعَالِمَ الْمُتَعَسِّفَ شَبِيهٌ بِالْجَاهِلِ
When you ask, ask in order to learn and do not ask in order to embarrass [the one whom you are asking]Indeed the ignorant one who learns is similar to a learned person and verily the learned one who is oppressive is similar to an ignorant person

أَلَا لَا يَسْتَقْبِحَنَّ مَنْ سُئِلَ [مَنْ يَعْلَمُ إِنْ سُئِلَ] عَمَّا لَا يَعْلَمُ أَنْ يَقُولَ لَا أَعْلَمُ
Indeed, the one who is asked about that which he does not know should never consider it demeaning to say “I don’t know”
