العاقل صفاته و علاماته
الْعَاقِلُ مَنْ هَجَرَ شَهْوَتَهُ وَبَاعَ دُنْيَاهُ بِآخِرَتِهِ
The intelligent person is one who forsakes his lust and sells his world for his Hereafter

الْعَاقِلُ مَنْ تَوَرَّعَ عَنِ الذُّنُوبِ وَتَنَزَّهَ عَنِ الْعُيُوبِ
The intelligent person is one who abstains from sins and keeps himself free from faults

الْعَاقِلُ مَنْ عَصَى هَوَاهُ فِي طَاعَةِ رَبِّهِ
The intelligent person is one who opposes his vain desire in obedience to his Lord

الْعَاقِلُ مَنْ غَلَبَ هَوَاهُ وَلَمْ يَبِعْ آخِرَتَهُ بِدُنْيَاهُ
The intelligent person is one who overcomes his vain desire and does not sell his Hereafter for his [temporary life in this] world

الْعَاقِلُ [الْكَامِلُ] مَنْ قَمَعَ هَوَاهُ بِعَقْلِهِ
The intelligent person is one who subdues his vain desire with his intellect

حَقٌّ عَلَى الْعَاقِلِ أَنْ يَقْهَرَ هَوَاهُ قَبْلَ ضِدِّهِ
It is a right upon the intelligent one to vanquish his vain desire before his adversary

الْعَاقِلُ مَنْ عَقَلَ لِسَانَهُ
The intelligent person is one who fetters his tongue

الْعَاقِلُ لَا يَتَكَلَّمُ إِلَّا بِحَاجَتِهِ أَوْ حُجَّتِهِ [وَ لَا يَشْتَغِلُ إِلَّا بِصَلَاحِ آخِرَتِهِ]
The intelligent person does not speak except when he needs to or in order to present his case

الْعَاقِلُ مَنْ عَقَلَ لِسَانَهُ إِلَّا عَنْ ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ
The intelligent person is one who fetters his tongue except from the remembrance [and extolment] of Allah

الْعَاقِلُ مَنْ صَانَ لِسَانَهُ عَنِ الْغِيبَةِ
The intelligent person is one who guards his tongue from backbiting

الْعَاقِلُ يَطْلُبُ الْكَمَالَ الْجَاهِلُ يَطْلُبُ الْمَالَ
The intelligent one seeks perfection, the ignorant one seeks wealth

الْعَاقِلُ مَنْ تَغَمَّدَ [تَعَمَّدَ] الذُّنُوبَ بِالْغُفْرَانِ [بِالْكُفْرَانِ]
The intelligent person is one who covers up sins with forgiveness

الْعَاقِلُ مَنْ أَحْسَنَ صَنَائِعَهُ وَوَضَعَ سَعْيَهُ فِي مَوَاضِعِهِ
The intelligent person is one who performs acts of kindness and puts his effort in its correct place

الْعَاقِلُ إِذَا سَكَتَ فَكَرَ وَإِذَا نَطَقَ ذَكَرَ وَإِذَا نَظَرَ اعْتَبَرَ
When the intelligent one is quiet, he reflects and when he speaks, he remembers [and extols Allah] and when he observes, he takes lesson

الْعَاقِلُ مَنْ زَهِدَ فِي دُنْيَا فَانِيَةٍ دَنِيَّةٍ [دَنِيَّةٍ فَانِيَةٍ] وَرَغِبَ فِي جَنَّةٍ سَنِيَّةٍ خَالِدَةٍ عَالِيَةٍ [عَلِيَّةٍ]
The intelligent person is one who abstains from [the pleasures of] the lowly, perishing world and desires the sublime, everlasting, lofty Paradise

الْعَاقِلُ مَنْ وَضَعَ الْأَشْيَاءَ مَوَاضِعَهَا وَالْجَاهِلُ ضِدُّ ذَلِكَ
The intelligent person is one who puts things in their right places, and the ignorant one does the opposite of this

الْعَاقِلُ إِذَا عَلِمَ عَمِلَ وَإِذَا عَمِلَ أَخْلَصَ وَإِذَا أَخْلَصَ اعْتَزَلَ
The intelligent person acts when he knows and when he acts, he does so sincerely, and when he becomes sincere, he secludes himself [from others]

الْعَاقِلُ يَجْتَهِدُ فِي عَمَلِهِ وَيُقَصِّرُ مِنْ أَمَلِهِ
The intelligent person strives in his work and shortens his hopes

الْعَاقِلُ لَا يَفْرُطُ بِهِ عُنْفٌ وَلَا يَقْعُدُ بِهِ ضَعْفٌ
The intelligent one is neither pushed to the extreme by violence nor is he hampered by weakness

الْعَاقِلُ مَنْ يَمْلِكُ نَفْسَهُ إِذَا غَضِبَ وَإِذَا رَغِبَ وَإِذَا رَهِبَ
The intelligent person is one who controls himself when he gets angry, when he desires and when he is frightened

الْعَاقِلُ يَتَقَاضَى نَفْسَهُ بِمَا يَجِبُ عَلَيْهِ وَلَا يَتَقَاضَى [غَيْرَهُ] لِنَفْسِهِ بِمَا يَجِبُ لَهُ
The intelligent person charges himself with performing that which is obligatory upon him and he does not charge himself with seeking that which is due to him

الْعَقْلُ إِنَّكَ تَقْتَصِدُ فَلَا تُسْرِفُ وَتَعِدُ فَلَا تُخْلِفُ وَإِذَا غَضِبْتَ حَلُمْتَ
Intelligence is for you to be moderate and not indulge in extravagance, to promise and not to break your promise, and to be forbearing when you get angry

الْعَقْلُ أَنْ تَقُولَ مَا تَعْرِفُ وَتَعْمَلَ بِمَا تَنْطِقُ بِهِ
Intelligence is for you to speak [only] of what you know and to act upon what you say

الْعَاقِلُ مَنْ لَا يُضِيعُ لَهُ نَفْسَاً فِيمَا لَا يَنْفَعُهُ وَلَا يَقْتَنِي مَا لَا يَصْحَبُهُ
The intelligent person is one who does not waste his [time and] energy in that which does not benefit him, and does not [strive to] acquire that which will not accompany him [after his death]

الْعَاقِلُ مَنْ غَلَبَ نَوَازِعَ أَهْوِيَتِهِ
The intelligent person is one who overpowers his contending vain desires

الْعَاقِلُ مَنْ سَلَّمَ إِلَى الْقَضَاءِ وَعَمِلَ بِالْحَزْمِ
The intelligent person is one who submits to the decree [of Allah] and acts with judiciousness [and determination]

إِنَّ الْعَاقِلَ لَا يَنْخَدِعُ لِلطَّمَعِ
Verily the intelligent one is not beguiled by covetousness

إِنَّ الْعَاقِلَ مَنْ عَقْلُهُ فِي إِرْشَادٍ [فِي ارْتِيَادٍ] وَمَنْ رَأْيُهُ فِي ازْدِيَادٍ فَلِذَلِكَ رَأْيُهُ سَدِيدٌ وَفِعْلُهُ حَمِيدٌ
Verily the intelligent person is one whose intellect is [employed] in right guidance and whose view is in [the process of development and] growth, that is why his view is correct and his action praiseworthy

إِنَّ الْعَاقِلَ يَتَّعِظُ بِالْأَدَبِ وَالْبَهَائِمَ لَا تَتَّعِظُ إِلَّا بِالضَّرْبِ
Indeed, the intelligent one learns through discipline while the beasts are not trained except by beating

إِنَّ الْعَاقِلَ يَنْبَغِي أَنْ يَحْذَرَ الْمَوْتَ فِي هَذِهِ الدَّارِ وَيُحْسِنَ لَهُ التَّأَهُّبَ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَصِلَ إِلَى دَارٍ يَتَمَنَّى فِيهَا الْمَوْتَ فَلَا يَجِدُهُ
Verily it behoves the intelligent one to be cautious of death in this world, and he should make good preparations before he arrives at the abode wherein one wishes for death but does not find it

حَقٌّ عَلَى الْعَاقِلِ الْعَمَلُ لِلْمَعَادِ وَالِاسْتِكْثَارُ مِنَ الزَّادِ
It is a right that is due on the intelligent one to work for the Hereafter and to seek more provisions [for it]

إِنَّمَا اللَّبِيبُ مَنِ اسْتَسَلَّ [مَنِ اسْتَلَ] الْأَحْقَادَ
Only he is intelligent who takes out the grudges [from his heart]

إِنَّمَا الْبَصِيرُ مَنْ سَمِعَ فَفَكَرَ وَنَظَرَ فَأَبْصَرَ وَانْتَفَعَ بِالْعِبَرِ
Indeed the perceptive person is one who listens and then ponders, sees then reflects, and derives benefit from examples

ثَلَاثَةٌ تَدُلُّ عَلَى عُقُولِ أَرْبَابِهَا الرَّسُولُ وَالْكِتَابُ وَالْهَدِيَّةُ
Three things show the intelligence of their lords: the messenger, the message and the gift

حَقٌّ عَلَى الْعَاقِلِ أَنْ يَسْتَدِيمَ الِاسْتِرْشَادَ وَيَتْرُكَ الِاسْتِبْدَادَ
It behooves the intelligent one to continuously seek the right path and abandon obstinacy

رَغْبَةُ الْعَاقِلِ فِي الْحِكْمَةِ وَهِمَّةُ الْجَاهِلِ فِي الْحَمَاقَةِ
The desire of an intelligent person is in wisdom and the ambition of an ignorant person is in foolishness

كُلُّ عَاقِلٍ مَغْمُومٌ
Every intelligent person is sorrowful (or sad)

Every intelligent person is sorrowful (or sad)

لِلْعَاقِلِ فِي كُلِّ عَمَلٍ إِحْسَانٌ
For the intelligent one, there is goodness in every action [he does]

لِلْعَاقِلِ فِي كُلِّ كَلِمَةٍ نُبْلٌ
For the intelligent one, there is nobility in every word [he speaks]

لِلْعَاقِلِ فِي كُلِّ عَمَلٍ ارْتِيَاضٌ
For the intelligent one, in every action there is self-discipline

لَيْسَ لِلْعَاقِلِ أَنْ يَكُونَ شَاخِصاً إِلَّا فِي ثَلَاثٍ حَظْوَةٍ فِي مَعَادٍ أَوْ مَرَمَّةٍ لِمَعَاشٍ أَوْ لَذَّةٍ فِي غَيْرِ مُحَرَّمٍ
It is not for the intelligent one to move out [of his home] except for three things: to do something to improve his Hereafter, or to earn his livelihood, or to enjoy what is not forbidden

يَنْبَغِي لِلْعَاقِلِ أَنْ يُخَاطِبَ الْجَاهِلَ مُخَاطَبَةَ الطَّبِيبِ الْمَرِيضَ
It behoves an intelligent person to address an ignorant one like a doctor addresses a sick patient

سِتَّةٌ تُخْتَبَرُ بِهَا عُقُولُ النَّاسِ الْحِلْمُ عِنْدَ الْغَضَبِ وَالصَبْرُ عِنْدَ الرَّهَبِ وَالْقَصْدُ عِنْدَ الرَّغَبِ وَتَقْوَى اللَّهِ فِي [عَلَى] كُلِّ حَالٍ وَحُسْنُ الْمُدَارَاةِ وَقِلَّةُ الْمُمَارَاةِ
There are six situations in which the intellects of people are tested: association, transaction, authority, isolation, affluence and poverty
