الدنيا و حبها خسران الآخرة
الدُّنْيَا تَضُرُّ الْآخِرَةُ تَسُرُّ
This world harms, the Hereafter delights

النَّاسُ فِي الدُّنْيَا عَامِلَانِ عَامِلٌ فِي الدُّنْيَا لِلدُّنْيَا قَدْ شَغَلَتْهُ دُنْيَاهُ عَنْ آخِرَتِهِ يَخْشَى عَلَى مَنْ يُخَلِّفُ الْفَقْرَ وَيَأْمَنُهُ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ فَيُفْنِي عُمُرَهُ فِي مَنْفَعَةِ غَيْرِهِ وَعَامِلٌ فِي الدُّنْيَا لِمَا بَعْدَهَا فَجَاءَهُ الَّذِي لَهُ بِغَيْرِ عَمَلٍ فَأَحْرَزَ الْحَظَّيْنِ مَعاً وَمَلَكَ الدَّارَيْنِ جَمِيعاً
The people who work in this world are of two types: one works in this world for this world; his world has indeed distracted him from his HereafterHe fears poverty for those whom he will leave behind but feels safe from it himself; so he spends his entire life for the benefit of othersThe other one works in this world for that which is to come after it, so that which is [allotted] for him comes to him without [extra] workThus he acquires both the shares together and gains possession of both the abodes collectively

أَخْرِجُوا الدُّنْيَا مِنْ قُلُوبِكُمْ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَخْرُجَ مِنْهَا أَجْسَادُكُمْ فَفِيهَا اخْتُبِرْتُمْ وَلِغَيْرِهَا خُلِقْتُمْ
Remove [the love of] this world from your hearts before your bodies [are made to] leave it, for in it you are tested and for other than it have you been created

أَرْبَحُ النَّاسِ مَنِ اشْتَرَى بِالدُّنْيَا الْآخِرَةَ
The person who makes the most profit is one who buys the Hereafter with this world

أَخْسَرُ النَّاسِ مَنْ رَضِيَ الدُّنْيَا [بِالدُّنْيَا] عِوَضاً عَنِ الْآخِرَةِ
The person who suffers the greatest loss is one who settles for this world in exchange for the Hereafter

إِنَّ مَثَلَ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ كَرَجُلٍ لَهُ امْرَأَتَانِ إِذَا أَرْضَى إِحْدَاهُمَا أَسْخَطَ الْأُخْرَى
Indeed the similitude of this world and the Hereafter is like a man who has two wives, when he pleases one of them he angers the other

إِنَّ مَنْ كَانَتِ الْعَاجِلَةُ أَمْلَكَ بِهِ مِنَ الْآجِلَةِ وَأُمُورُ الدُّنْيَا أَغْلَبَ عَلَيْهِ مِنْ أُمُورِ الْآخِرَةِ فَقَدْ بَاعَ الْبَاقِيَ بِالْفَانِي وَتَعَوَّضَ الْبَائِدَ عَنِ الْخَالِدِ وَأَهْلَكَ نَفْسَهُ وَرَضِيَ لَهَا بِالْحَائِلِ الزَّائِلِ وَنَكَبَ بِهَا عَنْ نَهْجِ السَّبِيلِ
Verily the one who is more possessive of this world than of the Hereafter and is more overwhelmed by the affairs of this world than those of the next, has sold the everlasting for the transient and has exchanged the eternal for the temporal; he has destroyed his soul and has accepted for it the perishing and short-lived while causing it to deviate from the clear path [of guidance]

إِنَّ الدُّنْيَا قَدْ أَدْبَرَتْ وَآذَنَتْ بِوَدَاعٍ وَإِنَّ الْآخِرَةَ قَدْ أَقْبَلَتْ وَأَشْرَفَتْ بِاطِّلَاعٍ
Verily this world has turned back and announced its departure, and indeed the Hereafter has advanced and is about to emerge

إِنَّ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةَ عَدُوَّانِ مُتَفَاوِتَانِ وَسَبِيلَانِ مُخْتَلِفَانِ فَمَنْ أَحَبَّ الدُّنْيَا وَتَوَالاهَا أَبْغَضَ الْآخِرَةَ وَعَادَاهَا وَهُمَا بِمَنْزِلَةِ الْمَشْرِقِ وَالْمَغْرِبِ وَمَاشٍ بَيْنَهُمَا فَكُلَّمَا قَرُبَ مِنْ وَاحِدٍ بَعُدَ مِنَ الْآخَرِ وَهُمَا بَعْدُ ضَرَّتَانِ
Indeed this world and the Hereafter are two unequal enemies and two separate ways, so whoever loves this world and befriends it, hates the Hereafter and takes it as an enemyThey are like the East and the West and one who walks between the two, such that whenever he comes closer to one [direction], he distances himself from the otherAfter all, they are both like fellow-wives [seeking to pull their husband only towards themselves]

إِنْ دُعِيَ إِلَى حَرْثِ الدُّنْيَا عَمِلَ وَإِنْ دُعِيَ إِلَى حَرْثِ الْآخِرَةِ كَسِلَ
He (‘a) said about the one whom he censured: he is lazyIf he becomes wealthy, he turns arrogant and falls into vice and if he becomes poor

إِنَّكُمْ إِنَّمَا خُلِقْتُمْ لِلْآخِرَةِ لَا لِلدُّنْيَا وَلِلْبَقَاءِ لَا لِلْفَنَاءِ
Verily you have been created for the Hereafter, not for this world, and for perpetuity, not for extinction

بِإِيثَارِ حُبِّ الْعَاجِلَةِ صَارَ مَنْ صَارَ إِلَى سُوءِ الْآجِلَةِ
By preferring the love of this transient world, one ends up in an unpleasant state in the Hereafter

ثَرْوَةُ الدُّنْيَا فَقْرُ الْآخِرَةِ
The affluence of this world is the poverty of the Hereafter

حَلَاوَةُ الدُّنْيَا تُوجِبُ مَرَارَةَ الْآخِرَةِ وَسُوءَ الْعُقْبَى
The sweetness of this world leads to the bitterness of the Hereafter and an unpleasant ending

حَصِّلُوا الْآخِرَةَ بِتَرْكِ الدُّنْيَا وَلَا تُحَصِّلُوا بِتَرْكِ الدِّينِ الدُّنْيَا
Attain the Hereafter by abandoning this world, and don’t [try to] acquire [the embellishments of] this world by abandoning the faith

ذُلُّ الدُّنْيَا عِزُّ الْآخِرَةِ
The humiliation of this world is the glory of the Hereafter

صَلَاحُ الْآخِرَةِ رَفْضُ الدُّنْيَا
The betterment of the Hereafter is in the rejection of this world

طَلَبُ الْجَمْعِ بَيْنَ الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ مِنْ خِدَاعِ النَّفْسِ
Seeking to join this world with the Hereafter is from the deceptions of the self

طَالِبُ الدُّنْيَا تَفُوتُهُ الْآخِرَةُ وَيُدْرِكُهُ الْمَوْتُ حَتَّى يَأْخُذَهُ بَغْتَةً [يَأْخُذَ بِعُنُقِهِ] وَلَا يُدْرِكُ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا مَا قُسِمَ لَهُ
The seeker of this world misses [the opportunity to work for] the Hereafter and death comes to him unexpectedly, and he does not get from this world except what has been apportioned for him

كَيْفَ يَعْمَلُ لِلْآخِرَةِ الْمَشْغُولُ بِالدُّنْيَا
How can one who is occupied with this world work for the Hereafter?

لَمْ يُفِدْ مَنْ كَانَتْ هِمَّتُهُ الدُّنْيَا عِوَضاً وَلَمْ يَقْضِ مُفْتَرَضاً
One whose effort was for this world did not earn any recompense [for it] nor did he fulfil any obligation

مَنْ بَاعَ آخِرَتَهُ بِدُنْيَاهُ خَسِرَهُمَا
One who sells his Hereafter for his world loses both of them

مَنْ رَضِيَ بِالدُّنْيَا فَاتَتْهُ الْآخِرَةُ
One who is pleased with this world is eluded by the Hereafter

مَنْ أَحَبَّ لِقَاءَ اللَّهِ سُبْحَانَهُ سَلَا عَنِ الدُّنْيَا
One who loves to meet Allah, the Glorified, forgets this world

مَنْ أَخْسَرُ مِمَّنْ تَعَوَّضَ عَنِ الْآخِرَةِ بِالدُّنْيَا
Who is more at a loss than the one who exchanges the Hereafter for this world?

مَنْ رَغِبَ فِي زَخَارِفِ الدُّنْيَا فَاتَهُ الْبَقَاءُ الْمَطْلُوبُ
One who desires the adornments of this world is eluded by the sought after eternal bliss [of the Hereafter]

مَنْ عَمَّرَ دُنْيَاهُ أَفْسَدَ دِينَهُ وَأَخْرَبَ أُخْرَاهُ
One who builds his world corrupts his religion and ruins his Hereafter

مَنْ غَلَبَتِ الدُّنْيَا عَلَيْهِ عَمِيَ عَمَّا بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ
One who has been overcome by this world is blind to that which is in front of him

مَنْ طَلَبَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا شَيْئاً فَاتَهُ مِنَ الْآخِرَةِ أَكْثَرُ مِمَّا طَلِبَ
One who seeks something from this world is eluded by something greater from the Hereafter than what he seeks [from this world]

مَنْ طَلَبَ الدُّنْيَا بِعَمَلِ الْآخِرَةِ كَانَ أَبْعَدَ لَهُ مِمَّا طَلَبَ
Whoever seeks [the profits of] this world through the work of the Hereafter, it takes him further away from that which he seeks

مَنْ مَلَكَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا شَيْئاً فَاتَهُ مِنَ الْآخِرَةِ أَكْثَرُ مِمَّا مَلَكَ
Whoever gains possession of something of this world loses much more of the Hereafter than what he possesses [of this world]

مَا ظَفِرَ بِالْآخِرَةِ مَنْ كَانَتِ الدُّنْيَا مَطْلَبَهُ
He whose goal is [attaining] this world will not be successful in [attaining] the Hereafter

مَا الْتَذَّ أَحَدٌ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا لَذَّةً إِلَّا كَانَتْ لَهُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ غُصَّةً
Nobody delights in any of the pleasures of this world but that it will be a distress for him on the Day of Resurrection

مَا زَادَ فِي الدُّنْيَا نَقَصَ فِي الْآخِرَةِ
That which [one] increases in this world, [he] diminishes in the Hereafter

مَا الْمَغْرُورُ الَّذِي ظَفِرَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا بِأَدْنَى سُهْمَتِهِ كَالْآخَرِ الَّذِي ظَفِرَ مِنَ الْآخِرَةِ بِأَعْلَى هِمَّتِهِ
The deceived person who gains success in this world through its smallest portion is not like the other person who is gains success in the Hereafter by exerting his greatest effort

هَلَكَ الْفَرِحُونَ بِالدُّنْيَا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ وَنَجَا الْمَحْزُونُونَ بِهَا
Those who are pleased with this world are destroyed on the Day of Resurrection and those who are disheartened by it are saved

لَا تَرْغَبْ فِي الدُّنْيَا فَتَخْسَرَ آخِرَتَكَ
Do not desire this world thereby losing your Hereafter

لَا تَبِيعُوا الْآخِرَةَ بِالدُّنْيَا وَلَا تَسْتَبْدِلُوا الْفَنَاءَ بِالْبَقَاءِ
Do not sell the Hereafter for this world and do not exchange the eternal with the transient

لَا يَجْتَمِعُ الْفَنَاءُ وَالْبَقَاءُ

There is no benefit in working for the Hereafter while having desire for this world

لَا يَتْرُكُ النَّاسُ شَيْئاً مِنْ دُنْيَاهُمْ لِإِصْلَاحِ آخِرَتِهِمْ إِلَّا عَوَّضَهُمُ اللَّهُ سُبْحَانَهُ خَيْراً مِنْهُ
People do not abstain from anything of their worldly life for the sake of improving their Hereafter but that Allah, the Glorified, recompenses them with what is better than it
