الْمَعْرِفَةُ نُورُ الْقَلْبِ
Cognizance is the light of the heart

الْمَعْرِفَةُ الْفَوْزُ بِالْقُدْسِ
Cognizance is the successful attainment of [purification and] the sacred

الْمَعْرِفَةُ بُرْهَانُ [بُنْيَانُ النُّبْلِ] الْفَضْلِ
Cognizance is the evidence of excellence (or nobility)

ذَهَابُ الْبَصَرِ خَيْرٌ مِنْ عَمَى الْبَصِيرَةِ
The loss of eyesight is better than the blinding of insight

فَقْدُ الْبَصَرِ أَهْوَنُ مِنْ فِقْدَانِ الْبَصِيرَةِ
Loss of eyesight is easier than loss of insight

لِلطَّالِبِ الْبَالِغِ لَذَّةُ الْإِدْرَاكِ
For the seeker who achieves what he seeks, there is delight in [his] accomplishment

لَا يَسْتَخِفُّ بِالْعِلْمِ وَأَهْلِهِ إِلَّا أَحْمَقٌ جَاهِلٌ
A little knowledge removes a lot of ignorance

نَظَرُ الْبَصَرِ لَا يُجْدِي إِذَا عَمِيَتِ الْبَصِيرَةُ
Eyesight is of no benefit if insight is blinded

الْمُتَعَبِّدُ بِغَيْرِ عِلْمٍ كَحِمَارِ الطَّاحُونَةِ يَدُورُ وَلَا يَبْرَحُ مِنْ مَكَانِهِ
The worshipper without knowledge is like the donkey that drives a mill, it moves round and round but does not depart from its place

فَاسْمَعُوا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ وَعُوا وَأَحْضِرُوا آذَانَ قُلُوبِكُمْ تَفْهَمُوا
Then listen attentively, O people, and open the ears of your hearts so that you may understand

كَمَالُ الْمَرْءِ عَقْلُهُ وَقِيمَتُهُ فَضْلُهُ
The perfection of a person is his intellect and his value is his benevolence

يُنْبِئُ عَنْ قِيمَةِ كُلِّ امْرِئٍ عِلْمُهُ وَعَقْلُهُ
A person’s value is indicated by his knowledge and intellect

مَنْ لَمْ يَعْرِفِ الْخَيْرَ مِنَ الشَّرِّ فَهُوَ مِنَ الْبَهَائِمِ
Whoever does not know how to distinguish good from evil, then he is [actually] from the beasts

رَأْيُ الشَّيْخِ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِنْ جَلَدِ الْغُلَامِ
The opinion of an elderly person is more beloved to me than the fortitude [and bravery] of a youth
