الدنيا دار فناء
الدُّنْيَا فَانِيَةٌ
This world is transient

الْعَيْشُ يَحْلُو وَيَمُرُّ
Life has sweetness and bitterness

الدُّنْيَا كَيَوْمٍ مَضَى وَشَهْرٍ انْقَضَى
This world is like the day that has passed and the month that has elapsed

الدُّنْيَا مُنْتَقِلَةٌ فَانِيَةٌ إِنْ بَقِيَتْ لَكَ لَمْ تَبْقَ لَهَا
This world is fleeting and perishing; [even] if it remains for you, you will not remain for it

أَوْقَاتُ الدُّنْيَا وَإِنْ طَالَتْ قَصِيرَةٌ وَالْمُتْعَةُ بِهَا وَإِنْ كَثُرَتْ يَسِيرَةٌ
The times of this world, even if they prolong, are short; and its enjoyments, even if they are many, are few [when compared to the Hereafter]

أَقْبِلُوا عَلَى مَنْ أَقْبَلَتْ عَلَيْهِ الدُّنْيَا فَإِنَّهُ أَجْدَرُ بِالْغِنَى
Draw near to the one to whom this world has yielded [itself], for indeed he is more worthy of prosperity [than the one who follows this world and its allure]

إِنَّ لِلَّهِ سُبْحَانَهُ مَلَكاً يُنَادِي فِي كُلِّ يَوْمٍ يَا أَهْلَ الدُّنْيَا لِدُوا لِلْمَوْتِ وَابْنُوا لِلْخَرَابِ وَاجْمَعُوا لِلذَّهَابِ
Verily Allah, the Glorified, has an angel who calls out every day: “O people of the world, procreate for death, construct for destruction and gather up for departure!”

إِنَّمَا خُلِقْتُمْ لِلْبَقَاءِ لَا لِلْفَنَاءِ وَإِنَّكُمْ فِي دَارِ بُلْغَةٍ وَمَنْزِلِ قُلْعَةٍ
Verily you have been created for perpetuity, not for extinction; and you are most certainly in a temporary abode of subsistence and a place which is not suitable for settling

إِذَا كَانَ الْبَقَاءُ لَا يُوجَدُ فَالنَّعِيمُ زَائِلٌ
When lastingness is not found, then bounties are short-lived

بِئْسَ الِاخْتِيَارُ التَّعَوُّضُ [التَّعْوِيضُ] بِمَا يَفْنَى عَمَّا يَبْقَى
The worst choice is exchanging the everlasting with the transient

بَقَاؤُكُمْ إِلَى فَنَاءٍ وَفَنَاؤُكُمْ إِلَى بَقَاءٍ
Your remaining [in this world] is towards annihilation and your annihilation [from this world] is towards eternity

تَمِيزُ الْبَاقِي مِنَ الْفَانِي مِنْ أَشْرَفِ النَّظَرِ
Distinguishing the everlasting from the perishing is from the noblest discernment

ظَلَمَ نَفْسَهُ مَنْ رَضِيَ بِدَارِ الْفَنَاءِ عِوَضاً عَنْ دَارِ الْبَقَاءِ
Whoever is satisfied with the temporary abode in place of the everlasting abode has oppressed himself

غَايَةُ الدُّنْيَا الْفَنَاءُ
The end of this world is annihilation

غَرَّارَةٌ غَرُورٌ مَا فِيهَا فَانِيَةٌ فَانٍ مَنْ عَلَيْهَا
He (‘a) said about this world: It is deceitful that which is in it is illusory; it is perishing all that is upon it perishes

كُلُّ جَمْعٍ إِلَى شَتَاتٍ
Every gathering is [headed] towards dispersion

كُلُّ مُدَّةٍ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا إِلَى انْتِهَاءٍ وَكُلُّ حَيٍّ فِيهَا إِلَى مَمَاتٍ وَفَنَاءٍ
Every moment of this world is [taking it] towards the end and every living thing in it is [moving] towards its death and annihilation

كَمْ مِنْ بَانٍ مَا لَا يَسْكُنُهُ
How many a builder has built that which he does not reside in

كُرُورُ الْأَيَّامِ أَحْلَامٌ وَلَذَّاتُهَا آلَامٌ وَمَوَاهِبُهَا فَنَاءٌ وَأَسْقَامٌ
The succession of days are [like] dreams, their pleasures are [causes of] agonies and their gifts are [fraught with] evanescence and maladies

لِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ فَوْتٌ
For everything there is a passing away

لِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا انْقِضَاءٌ وَفَنَاءٌ
For everything in this world there is expiry and annihilation

مَنْ أَغْبَنُ مِمَّنْ بَاعَ الْبَقَاءَ بِالْفَنَاءِ
Who is more at a disadvantage than the one who sells the eternal [Hereafter] for the transient [world]?

مَا خَيْرُ دَارٍ تَنْقُضُ نَقْضَ الْبِنَاءِ وَعُمُرٍ يَفْنَى فَنَاءَ الزَّادِ
What is good in a house that falls down like demolished construction and in a lifetime that expires as [its] provisions get exhausted?

مَا أَقْرَبَ الدُّنْيَا مِنَ الذَّهَابِ وَالشَّيْبَ مِنَ الشَّبَابِ وَالشَّكَّ مِنَ الِارْتِيَابِ
How close this world is to departure, old age is to youth, and doubt is to uncertainty!

مَا وَلَدْتُمْ فَلِلتُّرَابِ وَمَا بَنَيْتُمْ فَلِلْخَرَابِ وَمَا جَمَعْتُمْ فَلِلذَّهَابِ وَمَا عَمِلْتُمْ فَفِي كِتَابٍ مُدَّخَرٌ لِيَوْمِ الْحِسَابِ
That which you beget is for the dust, that which you build is for destruction, that which you amass is to perish, that which you do is recorded in a book [of deeds] and stored for the Day of Accounting

نَحْنُ أَعْوَانُ الْمَنُونِ وَأَنْفُسُنَا نَصْبُ الْحُتُوفِ فَمِنْ أَيْنَ نَرْجُو الْبَقَاءَ وَهَذَا اللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ لَمْ يَرْفَعَا مِنْ شَيْءٍ شَرَفاً إِلَّا أَسْرَعَا الْكَرَّةَ فِي هَدْمِ مَا بَنَيَا وَتَفْرِيقِ مَا جَمَعَا
We are the helpers of death and our lives are targets of mortality, so how can we expect to live forever while the night and day do not elevate anything in status but that they quickly destroyed that which they have built and separated that which they have brought together

هَلْ يَنْتَظِرُ أَهْلُ مُدَّةِ الْبَقَاءِ إِلَّا آوِنَةَ الْفَنَاءِ مَعَ قُرْبِ الزَّوَالِ وَأُزُوفِ الِانْتِقَالِ
Are the people who have been given time to live [in this world] awaiting anything but the time of death, while the hour is close and the journey is at hand?

لَا تَرْغَبْ فِي كُلِّ مَا يَفْنَى وَيَذْهَبُ فَكَفَى بِذَلِكَ مَضَرَّةً
Do not desire anything that perishes and goes away, for this enough of a detriment

كُلُّ فَانٍ يَسِيرٌ
Every perishing thing is insignificant
