الْأَيَّامُ تُوضِحُ السَّرَائِرَ الْكَامِنَةَ
The passing of days reveals the hidden secrets

الرُّكُونُ إِلَى الدُّنْيَا مَعَ مَا يُعَايِنُ مِنْ غَيْرِهَا جَهْلٌ
Reliance on this world, despite what is seen of its vicissitudes, is ignorance

الدُّنْيَا مَصَائِبُ مُفْجِعَةٌ وَمَنَايَا مُوجِعَةٌ وَعِبَرٌ [عِبْرَةٌ] مُقَطِّعَةٌ [مفصعة]
This world is [made up of] agonizing hardships, painful deaths and sharp lessons (or drastic changes)

اللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ دَائِبَانِ فِي طَيِّ الْبَاقِينَ وَمَحْوِ آثَارِ الْمَاضِينَ
The night and day are pursuing their courses in covering those who remain and wiping out the traces of those who have passed away

أَ وَلَسْتُمْ تَرَوْنَ أَهْلَ الدُّنْيَا يُمْسُونَ وَيُصْبِحُونَ عَلَى أَحْوَالٍ شَتَّى فَمَيِّتٌ يُبْكَى وَحَيٌّ يُعَزَّى وَصَرِيعٌ مُبْتَلًى وَعَائِدٌ يَعُودُ وَآخَرُ بِنَفْسِهِ يَجُودُ وَطَالِبٌ لِلدُّنْيَا وَالْمَوْتُ يَطْلُبُهُ وَغَافِلٌ لَيْسَ بِمَغْفُولٍ عَنْهُ وَعَلَى أَثَرِ الْمَاضِينَ مَا يَمْضِي الْبَاقُونَ
Do you not see the people of this world passing the evenings and mornings in different states? The dead being mourned and the living being condoled, the victim being afflicted and the visitor visiting him [to ask about his condition], and another who is sacrificing himself; and the one who is seeking this world while death seeks him; and the one who is heedless but not neglected; and those who remain behind continue to follow the footsteps of the those who preceded [them]

أَبْلَغُ نَاصِحٍ لَكَ الدُّنْيَا لَوِ انْتَصَحْتَ بِمَا تُرِيكَ مِنْ تَغَايُرِ الْحَالاتِ وَتُؤْذِنُكَ بِهِ مِنَ الْبَيْنِ وَالشَّتَاتِ
The most effective adviser for you is this world, if only you took a lesson from what it shows you of the changing circumstances and what it informs you of disunion and separation

إِنَّ الدُّنْيَا مَنْزِلُ قُلْعَةٍ وَلَيْسَتْ بِدَارِ نُجْعَةٍ خَيْرُهَا زَهِيدٌ وَشَرُّهَا عَتِيدٌ وَمِلْكُهَا يُسْلَبُ وَعَامِرُهَا يَخْرَبُ
Verily this world is an abode unfit for permanent residence, and is not the house for foragingIts good is trifling, its evil is ready at hand, its authority is snatched away and its habitation faces desolation

إِنَّ الدُّنْيَا دَارُ صِدْقٍ لِمَنْ صَدَّقَهَا وَدَارُ عَافِيَةٍ لِمَنْ فَهِمَ عَنْهَا وَدَارُ غِنًى لِمَنْ تَزَوَّدَ مِنْهَا وَدَارُ مَوْعِظَةٍ لِمَنِ اتَّعَظَ بِهَا قَدْ آذَنَتْ بِبَيْنِهَا وَنَادَتْ بِفِرَاقِهَا وَنَعَتْ نَفْسَهَا وَأَهْلَهَا فَمَثَّلَتْ لَهُمْ بِبَلَائِهَا الْبَلَاءَ وَشَوَّقَتْهُمْ بِسُرُورِهَا إِلَى السُّرُورِ رَاحَتْ بِعَافِيَةٍ وَتَبَكَّرَتْ [ابْتَكَرَتْ] بِفَجِيعَةٍ تَرْغِيباً وَتَرْهِيباً وَتَخْوِيفاً وَتَحْذِيراً فَذَمَّهَا رِجَالٌ غَدَاةَ النَّدَامَةِ وَحَمِدَهَا آخَرُونَ ذَكَّرَتْهُمْ فَذَكَرُوا وَحَدَّثَتْهُمْ فَصَدَقُوا وَوَعَظَتْهُمْ فَاتَّعَظُوا مِنْهَا الْغِيَرَ وَالْعِبَرَ
Verily this world is the abode of truth for the one who believes it [to be transient], the abode of wellbeing for the one who recognizes it [as such], the abode of riches for the one who takes provisions from it [for the Hereafter] and the abode of good counsel for the one who takes advice from itIt has announced its separation and proclaimed its departureIt has declared its own [impending] death and [the death] of its inhabitantsIt exemplifies for them, by its tribulations, the tribulation [of the Hereafter] and creates desire in them, by its pleasures, for the pleasures [of the Hereafter]It brings ease in the evening and brings grief in the morning through desire, apprehension, alarm and warningPeople dispraise it on the morning of their regret [on the Day of Reckoning] while others praise itIt reminded them [of the next life] so they remembered itIt related to them [things of the next life] and they believedIt admonished them and they took advice from it through [its] changes and lessons

إِنَّ لِلدُّنْيَا رِجَالًا لَدَيْهِمْ كُنُوزٌ مَذْخُورَةٌ مَذْمُومَةٌ عِنْدَكُمْ مَدْحُورَةٌ يُكْشَفُ بِهِمُ الدِّينُ كَكَشْفِ أَحَدِكُمْ رَأْسَ قِدْرِهِ يَلُوذُونَ كَالْجَرَادِ فَيُهْلِكُونَ جَبَابِرَةَ الْبِلَادِ
Verily this world has people who possess preserved treasures that are disparaged and cast away by youThe religion is opened up by them just as one of you would open the lid of his cooking potThey stick together like [a swarm of] locusts and destroy the tyrants of the lands

إِنَّ الدُّنْيَا مُنْتَهَى بَصَرِ الْأَعْمَى لَا يُبْصِرُ مِمَّا وَرَاءَهَا شَيْئاً وَالْبَصِيرُ ينقذها [يَنْفُذُهَا بَصَرُهُ وَيَعْلَمُ أَنَّ الدَّارَ وَرَاءَهَا فَالْبَصِيرُ مِنْهَا شَاخِصٌ وَالْأَعْمَى إِلَيْهَا شَاخِصٌ وَالْبَصِيرُ مِنْهَا مُتَزَوِّدٌ وَالْأَعْمَى لَهَا مُتَزَوِّدٌ
Indeed this world is the limit of the sight of the blind person who sees nothing that is beyond it, while the one endowed with insight sees through it and knows that there is an abode beyond itThus the discerning one wishes to depart from it while the blind one wishes to remain in it; the discerning one takes provisions from it while the blind one accumulates provisions in it

إِنَّ الدَّهْرَ يَجْرِي بِالْبَاقِينَ كَجَرْيِهِ بِالْمَاضِينَ مَا يَعُودُ مَا قَدْ وَلَّى وَلَا يَبْقَى سَرْمَداً مَا فِيهِ آخِرُ فَعَالِهِ كَأَوَّلِهِ مُتَسَابِقَةٌ أُمُورُهُ مُتَظَاهِرَةٌ أَعْلَامُهُ لَا يَنْفَكُّ مُصَاحِبُهُ مِنْ عَنَاءٍ وَفَنَاءٍ وَسَلَبٍ وَحَرَبٍ
Verily time will pass for those who remain [in this world] just as it passed for those gone byThat which has gone shall not return and that which is in it will not remain foreverIts later deeds are the same as the former onesIts affairs try to excel each another and its banners follow each otherIts companion is never separated from hardship, annihilation, pillage and war

إِنَّ الدَّهْرَ مُوتِرٌ قَوْسَهُ لَا تُخْطِي سِهَامُهُ وَلَا تُؤْسِي جِرَاحُهُ يَرْمِي الصَّحِيحَ بِالسُّقْمِ وَالنَّاجِيَ بِالْعَطَبِ
Verily time has its bow stretched [and ready], and its arrow does not miss, and its wound does not healIt afflicts the healthy with sickness and the [one who is] safe with destruction

كَفَى مُخْبِراً عَمَّا بَقِيَ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا مَا مَضَى مِنْهَا
That which has passed from this world suffices as an informer of what remains of this world

لَقَدْ كَاشَفَتْكُمُ الدُّنْيَا الْغِطَاءَ وَآذَنَتْكُمْ [أَذِنَتْكُمْ] عَلَى سَوَاءٍ
Indeed, this world has unveiled the cloak [of its disloyalty] and notified you all equally

مَنْ عَطَفَ عَلَيْهِ اللَّيْلُ وَالنَّهَارُ أَدَّبَاهُ وَأَبْلَيَاهُ وَإِلَى الْمَنَايَا أَدْنَيَاهُ
One whose nights and days pass him by is chastised and afflicted, and brought closer to his death by them

مَا لَكُمْ [مَا بَالُكُمْ] تُؤَمِّلُونَ مَا لَا تُدْرِكُونَهُ وَتَجْمَعُونَ مَا لَا تَأْكُلُونَهُ وَتَبْنُونَ مَا لَا تَسْكُنُونَهُ
What is the matter with you? You hope for that which you do not achieve, amass wealth which you do not use and build houses which you do not occupy!
