في الضيق فرج
أَضْيَقُ مَا يَكُونُ الْحَرَجُ أَقْرَبُ مَا يَكُونُ الْفَرَجُ
The more restricting [and difficult] the hardship, the closer the relief

أَقْرَبُ مَا يَكُونُ الْفَرَجُ عِنْدَ تَضَايُقِ الْأَمْرِ
The time when relief is closest is when the affair becomes unbearable

عِنْدَ انْسِدَادِ الْفَرَجِ تَبْدُو مَطَالِعُ الْفَرَجِ
When the openings [and ways] get blocked, the rays of relief begin to appear

عِنْدَ تَنَاهِي الشَّدَائِدِ يَكُونُ تَوَقُّعُ الْفَرَجِ
When the difficulties reach their peak, there is hope for relief

عِنْدَ تَضَايُقِ حِلَقِ الْبَلَاءِ يَكُونُ الرَّخَاءُ
When the circle of affliction tightens, ease follows

مَا اشْتَدَّ ضِيقٌ إِلَّا قَرَّبَ اللَّهُ فَرَجَهُ
No agony intensifies but that Allah brings its relief closer

الْمَصَائِبُ بِالسَّوِيَّةِ مَقْسُومَةٌ بَيْنَ الْبَرِيَّةِ
Hardships are divided equally among the creatures

الْمُصِيبَةُ بِالصَّبْرِ أَعْظَمُ الْمُصِيبَتَيْنِ
Adversity [endured] with patience is the better of the two adversities

أَكْرَهُ الْمَكَارِهِ فِيمَا لَا يُحْتَسَبُ
Noble traits are [acquired] through difficulties

أَوْلَى النَّاسِ بِالْحَذَرِ أَسْلَمُهُمْ عَنِ [مِنَ] الْغِيَرِ
The most worthy of giving [to] is the one who feels the least in need of asking [from others]

إِنَّ لِلْمِحَنِ غَايَاتٍ لَا بُدَّ مِنِ انْقِضَائِهَا فَنَامُوا لَهَا إِلَى حِينِ انْقِضَائِهَا فَإِنَّ إِعْمَالَ الْحِيلَةِ فِيهَا قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ زِيَادَةٌ لَهَا
Verily tribulations have certain extents that have to be passed so remain in slumber until they pass, for indeed trying to find a solution before this only increases [and prolongs] it

إِنَّ لِلْمِحَنِ غَايَاتٍ وَلِلْغَايَاتِ نِهَايَاتٍ فَاصْبِرُوا لَهَا حَتَّى تَبْلُغَ نِهَايَاتُهَا فَالتَّحَرُّكُ لَهَا قَبْلَ انْقِضَائِهَا زِيَادَةٌ لَهَا
Verily tribulations have certain extents, and the extents have limits, so remain patient until you reach their limits, for trying to find a solution for them before they have passed only increases [and prolongs] them

إِذَا خِفْتَ صُعُوبَةَ أَمْرٍ فَاصْعُبْ لَهُ يَذُلَّ لَكَ وَخَادِعِ الزَّمَانَ عَنْ أَحْدَاثِهِ تَهُنْ عَلَيْكَ
When you fear the difficulty of an affair then be firm against it, it will yield to you; and deceive time about its calamities, it will become easy for you

إِذَا أَتَتْكَ الْمِحَنُ فَاقْعُدْ لَهَا فَإِنَّ قِيَامَكَ فِيهَا زِيَادَةٌ لَهَا
When tribulations come to you then sit and accept them, for indeed your standing up and confronting them will only aggravate them

بِالْفَجَائِعِ يَتَنَغَّصُ السُّرُورُ
Through calamities, happiness is spoiled

خُضِ الْغَمَرَاتِ إِلَى الْحَقِّ حَيْثُ كَانَ
Plunge into hardships to [arrive at] the truth wherever it may be

رُبَّ طَرَبٍ يَعُودُ بِالْحَرْبِ [كَالْحَرْبِ]
Many a time jubilation turns into rage

رُبَّ مَرْحُومٍ مِنْ بَلَاءٍ هُوَ دَوَاؤُهُ
Many a person is shown sympathy for an affliction that is [actually] his cure

رُبَّمَا تَجَهَّمَتِ الْأُمُورُ
Sometimes matters look grim (or inescapable)

عِنْدَ الشَّدَائِدِ تَذْهَبُ الْأَحْقَادُ
In times of difficulty, feelings of malice disappear

مَنْ رَكِبَ الْأَهْوَالَ اكْتَسَبَ الْمَالَ
Whoever embarks on the frightful [and risky] earns wealth
