علائم الحمق و السفه
الْأَحْمَقُ لَا يَحْسُنُ بِالْهَوَانِ
The fool does not improve by being disgraced

الْأَحْمَقُ لَا يَحْسُنُ [يحسن] بِالْهَوَانِ وَلَا يَنْفَكُّ عَنْ نَقْصٍ وَخُسْرَانٍ
A fool does not improve by abasement and he is does not separate from fault and loss

الْحُمْقُ الِاسْتِهْتَارُ بِالْفُضُولِ وَمُصَاحَبَةُ الْجَهُولِ
Foolishness is occupying oneself with the superfluous and accompanying the ignorant

تُعْرَفُ حَمَاقَةُ الرَّجُلِ بِالْأَشِرِ فِي النِّعْمَةِ وَكَثْرَةِ الذُّلِّ فِي الْمِحْنَةِ
The foolishness of a person is recognized by [his] cheerfulness in times of blessing and increased abjectness in times of tribulation

تُعْرَفُ حَمَاقَةُ الرَّجُلِ فِي ثَلَاثٍ فِي كَلَامِهِ فِيمَا لَا يَعْنِيهِ وَجَوَابِهِ عَمَّا لَا يُسْأَلُ عَنْهُ وَتَهَوُّرِهِ فِي الْأُمُورِ
The foolishness of a person is recognized in three things: in his talking about that which does not concern him, [in] his answering that which he was not asked and his recklessness in [his] affairs

لِلْأَحْمَقِ مَعَ كُلِّ قَوْلٍ يَمِينٌ
For the fool there is an oath with every statement

مَنْ سَافَهَ شُتِمَ
One who uses obscene language is reviled

مَنْ أَنْكَرَ عُيُوبَ النَّاسِ وَرَضِيَهَا لِنَفْسِهِ فَذَلِكَ الْأَحْمَقُ
Whoever disapproves of the faults of people but accepts them in himself, then that is a fool

مِنَ الْحُمْقِ الدَّالَّةُ عَلَى السُّلْطَانِ
Being audacious in front of the king is an act of foolishness

مِنْ دَلَائِلِ الْحُمْقِ دَالَّةٌ بِغَيْرِ آلَةٍ وَصَلَفٌ بِغَيْرِ شَرَفٍ
From the signs of foolishness are: being audacious without any means and boasting without [possessing] any nobility

مِنَ الْحُمْقِ الدَّالَّةُ عَلَى السُّلْطَانِ
Being audacious in front of the king is an act of foolishness

مِنْ أَمَارَاتِ الْأَحْمَقِ كَثْرَةُ تَلَوُّنِهِ
Increased fickleness is from the signs of a fool

السَّفَهُ مِفْتَاحُ السِّبَابِ
Dimwittedness is the key to ridicule

الطَّيْشُ يُنَكِّدُ الْعَيْشَ
Frivolity [and heedlessness] makes life bitter

الْخُرْقُ مُعَادَاةُ الْآرَاءِ [مُنَاوَاةُ الْأُمَرَاءِ] وَمُعَادَاةُ مَنْ يَقْدِرُ عَلَى الضَّرَّاءِ
Ineptness is opposing [others’] views and having enmity with one who is capable of causing harm

فِي السَّفَهِ وَكَثْرَةِ الْمِزَاحِ الْخُرْقُ
In impudence and excessive joking there is foolishness

مَنْ أَزْرَى عَلَى غَيْرِهِ بِمَا يَأْتِيهِ فَذَلِكَ الْأَخْرَقُ
One who belittles others for that which he himself does, then that is an imbecile
